XP SP2 - a service named Sympirtsph

Hello all!

I installed a fresh system a few days ago and I found the mysterious service > Sympirtsph.

Under the "General Tab", there is no description, no path to an executable and it is disabled.

Under the "Login Tab", the first time it is displayed, there is a blank account name but a password (dots) which is confirmed. The second time it is displayed (after viewing a different Tab and returning), it is said to be running under the Local System Account (which also is what is said on the main services page).

Under the "Reset Tab", it is "no action" everywhere.

Under the "Dependencies Tab", ... nothing.

Please, see the screenshots ...... ...... anyone who has an idea what this is?

It hadn't appeared when I created the first Ghost Image after installing Windows XP only but after installing Office XP, Adobe Acrobat 5.0.10 and Adobe Photoshop CS 8.0. Photoshop is the only program that is new to me and I haven't seen that service with Office and Acrobat installed. The computer hadn't been connected to the Internet at that time.

Thanks for Your time,
Christer

My System

See if there's more info at HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Sympirtsph

Not there? Search the registry for Sympirtsph.

Hello Dave!

See the sceenshots for what I found in the registry.

The entries for Sympirtsph and for LEGACY_SYMPIRTSPH in CurrentControlSet are duplicated in ControlSet001 and ControlSet002.

Hi Pete!

Thanks for that piece of information. It was the least cold track I could find. It may be related to the nVidia chipset drivers ...... ...... new thoughts ...... ...... new hopes!

its a service.. or was.

the Type setting of 0x20 means it rides inside an SVCHOST.
but then you can see its marked as part of the filter driver group, and has keys in the non pnp device class

My guess is you regcleaned away any chance we have of figuring out what it is.

I will note that its 99% a norton contraption, since SYMxxxx stuff always is, see SYMEVENT, SYMNDIS, etc..

What from norton looks like: pirtsph

Nope, no regcleaner or anything else has been even close to the computer.

I don't think so since nothing Norton had been installed.

Well, I didn't manage to identify the "service" but only to exclude all possible suspects. My last "thought" that it came from the nVidia drivers is not correct. If it was, then the "service" would have appeared in the first Ghost Image too because the nVidia drivers were installed prior to creating the first Ghost Image and the "service" didn't appear until the second Ghost Image had been created, after installing Office, Acrobat and Photoshop but nothing Norton. (I restored each Ghost Image to find out when the service appeared.)
