I came home from work yesterday to find my taskbar was two lines high instead of the usual one line. My wife was not home for me to find out if she had done anything. I was able to restore the size by opening taskbar properties, unchecking the Quick Launch button, click ok, then rechecking the box. This morning, after a reboot, I find the same two line taskbar, but my little trick does not work now. When I uncheck and recheck the Quick Launch button in Properties, I wind up with the same two line taskbar. I can adjust the size of the taskbar up to as many lines as I wish and back again, but cannot reduce it to a single line. I also find that I'm unable to move the separator (the seven dots thing that usually is to the right of the quick launch icons). All my quick launch icons are to the right of the separator, not to the left as I'd expect. I cannot move the quick launch icons anywhere. I'm running XP Pro SP2.

It may have something to do with the number of items in the Systray.

I just checked mine and it is two lines high. I can increses it to three line but I can not decrease the size.

OOPS. I just checked the properties and under ToolBars I unchecked QUICK LAUNCH and the toolbar went down to one line in size.

Billybob, I can do that too, but I'd like to have the Quick Launch available. It's handy to have the Show Desktop icon visible when I have a number of open windows. I could just click Start, and Show Desktop is there, but I don't want the taskbar to take up any more space than necessary. I don't have any more icons in the System Tray than I've ever had. My wife admits to navigating on the desktop, she's not sure exactly what she did, but all of a sudden the Taskbar increased in size.

I fixed it. I made the taskbar three lines high, then dragged my open window icons to the same line as the QL. I was then able to shrink the taskbar to one line. All is well. Thanks for your response. I couldn't find the double right arrow you referenced in your previous post.

Right click an empty spot on the taskbar. Be sure "Lock the Taskbar" is not checked. If it is click it and it will be unchecked. Now click the taskbar again to close the menu and move the cursor to the top of the taskbar. The cursor changes to a two ended arrow, press and hold down the left mouse button and drag the taskbar to the size you want. When done left click the taskbar again and be sure to check the lock feature. This works for anything else on the taskbar, ie... size of the QL portion of the taskbar.

I don't use QL, myself, but an easy way to get to the Desktop is Winkey + D. It also brings you back to where you started.

Guess this is a good time to mention the Auto-Hide feature for the Taskbar.
You can find it in Taskbar Properties. When enabled the Taskbar drops out of site until you put your cursor in that area. Then it pops up,and stays up until you move your cursor off the Taskbar. If you decide to try this be sure you also put a check in the Keep Taskbar on top box.

I use both the QL and the autohide options. I like this because I also have the address bar visible so I can go directly to a website if I have the url - saves time for me, I don't have to open my browser and then enter the website addy. I'm all for being efficient. ;)

I like having the autohide option active because I have some lovely photos as my wallpaper and the autohide leaves the photo completely unobscured. I know this isn't for everyone, but I like it a lot. :)
