Updates ready to install, but can't

I'm running XP SP2. I keep getting the yellow update shield appearing in my system tray. If I hold my mouse over it, I get a message telling me that Updates are ready to install and to click on the icon to get them to install. However, when I click on the icon (left or right click), the icon disappears and nothing happens. A few minutes later the icon reappears.

Does anyone recognise these symptoms?

Is there somewhere on my system where I can find the downloaded updates and install them without going through the system tray icon?

Use the windows update link in your start menu.

I had a similar problem but in my case I could click on the icon just fine. I'd double click on it and the window that shows the updates would pop up. But, when I clicked on the button to install them, the window would just disappear along with the tray icon. Eventually the tray icon would be back. I never did find an answer for it so I just updated via windows update. That worked fine and the icon would disappear until the next time there was updates available. Installing SP2 took care of the problem for me but I see you're already running it so that's really no help.

I'll have a look around and see what I can find. I didn't really spend a lot of time looking for a solution as the windows update work around was just fine for me. I still got the notifications and the shield icon dissappeared after using windows update so..... Maybe somebody else will have some suggestions for ya.

Which doesn't apply to me - my account is neither a guest nor a limited user account. I have local admin rights.

I found a fix. I logged in as the Domain admin and then installed the update. There must be something wrong with my user profile....

Your welcome but I really wasn't of much help. I'm glad you found the answer though. You had me scratching my head until I read the answer.

 

You pointed me in the right direction. The web update gave me an error message. When I thought about it those messages were both pointing at problems with the user account. So the next step was to try another account.
