Ok here is the deal. I consider myself pretty good with computes, but have a lot to learn. Everyone I know calls me when they have computer questions. It really gets annoying sometimes. I do however try to build PC’s for family and friends when they ask. They extra money is nice for a college student, but I also get into trouble when I am expected to service them when they go down. So finally here is my problem…

I built a computer for the daughter of my ex-girlfriend’s aunt (don’t ask). This was for her Christmas two years ago (2002). I couldn’t even tell you what the original parts were b/c so much has changed since then. Everything worked great until about 6 months ago they called me b/c the computer would shut down and reboot at random times. She said it was sometimes while burning CD’s, or surfing the net, or when using windows media player. No consistently to it what so ever. Here is the history of my recent actions.

    DEC 2002 "“ Built System
    Giga-byte Mobo
    Athlon XP 2400
    512 "“ RAM
    WD 60 GB HD
    32 MB ATI
    Lite-on 12x DVD Player
    Lite-on 48-?-48 CD-RW
    On Board Sound and LAN

    Aug. 2004 "“ Replaced….
64 MB Radeon 9200 (this was only b/c they wanted an upgrade)
    Mobo "“ BIOSTAR "M7NCD PRO" nForce2 Ultra 400
    RAM "“ Kingston 512 PC3200 CL3 184 "“ Pin Dimm
*** I also completely backed up their system and reformatted the HD. Reinstall every thing for OS, and Office suite, to Printer, AIM and all the other software they said they needed

Nov 2004 "“ Replaced Power supply: AG 420w

DEC 2004 "“ Replaced MOBO again, b/c I was also not happy with the same biostar I installed in my personal computer. Mine restarted a few times also.
    Giga-Byte GA-7N400L.
I didn’t have to reinstall all the software b/c I made sure to get the same nforce2 chipset. I played with the computer for several hours. Ran several tests, and tried everything to get it to shut off. It didn’t, so I returned it assuring them that it was fixed. 2 days later…

It is doing the same thing. Mostly when you exit windows media player, but also when surfing the net and once when running some SAT program? I am sitting in front of right now, typing this and begging someone to help me. I have searched the internet right and left and seem to see more post from you guys then any others. I will gladly become a $50.00 paying member if anyone can help me come up with a solution. I have read many of the other threads and tried some of the things that they suggested. I have already taken the auto-reboot function off in safe mode, it gave me the "blue screen of death" a few minutes ago (good thing I am typing this is word and saving it every few minutes). I can post all the memory dumb stuff if someone will give me a quick guide on how to do it. I really appreciate any help and sorry this was so long, just wanted to be sure and give everyone the whole story up front.

    Thanks,

    Reese

    Hello rewalker81.
Question: Does Windows look like it's shutting down normally and then reboots or does the monitor just suddenly go from Windows to black and then reboots?

1st impression: You've replaced everything but the RAM. Bad RAM can cause spontanious reboot problems, I've seen it.

2nd impression: I looked up your power supply and found it's only about a $22 unit. If the CPU is the brain, the PS is the heart. It must reliably pump the proper voltage through the system. I always use Antec power supplies, but other brands can be good to. I allocate at least $75 for the ps on any PC I build. A weak or faulty ps can cause this problem.

    From your dump file:
Do they have an HP printer or other HP device? I can't find HP_IZE anywhere, but I'm guessing it has to do with an HP product.

Finally, do you subscribe to any PC mags? I heartily recommend Maximum PC. I use their recomendations (usually from a mag 6mo. to 1yr old, as I can't afford cutting edge tech).

Finally, I always tell my customers that they get what they pay for.

thanks for the reply, yes the screen just goes blank and then reboots. Not shut down procedure at all. To tell you thruth, i did not actuall install that power supply, I wasn't in town so they got come hospital tech guy to look at it. And the RAM was replaced in Aug.

Yes, there is an HP photo printer installed on the machine. Should i uninstall it and reinstall it?

Finally, no i do not currently subscribe, but probably will once i get out of College, money is tight for me too. I also agree, you get what you payfore.

I will also add this, i woud say 8 out of 10 times, the computer shuts down while Windows Media player is open, not always but most of the time. Could it be currupt of somthing. Is there anyway to uninstall and reinstall it, or might I try to reimage the machine again?

    Please Help

    Thanks,

    Reese

the dump file you posted was for a user mode program crashing. It had nothing to do with a random reboot. After your machine reboots, give it a little time to generate the dump, then go look in c:\windows and c:\windows\minidump for an appropriately timestamped file.

In absence of actual data, i can only say that RAM is the most common hardware vector, and should be one of the first things to try in your hardware troubleshooting.

Get us a dump log from a blue screen, and we can help you more.

I will try to go back over to their house this weekend and make it crash again to get a correct dump log. Before i left it last night, i put a different stick of Kingston 512 3200 Ram i had laying around. I will see what it does over the next few days. Thanks,

    Reese

    The problem still persists.

Sorry, it has been a while since I have had a chance to post back due the fact that I have been out of town, but I am still having a major problem with this compute. The RAM has been replaced, but it still crashes several times a night. I have been trying to create the dump files and I am pretty sure that I am following the instructions correctly, but every time I look at the c:\debuglog.txt file it is the exact same as the one posted above. Also I get this error when I try to open the many minidump files. They appear to be the correct times of the crashes, but all of them read the same…

    "%1 is not a valid Win32 application. "

Please help if anyone can. I know there has to be a logical explanation to the reboots.

    Thanks,

    Reese
