Hi. Following a clean install (PC crashed - NTLDR corrupt, re-installed with Ghost image) and now when I click 'shutdown' my PC does exactly that, but, after 45 seconds it starts again. It was doing it before and now after SP2 installation. I Have tried everything from the newsgroups (turning off automatic restart etc,) and suggestions by Microsoft i.e. removing CTFMON.exe and the appropriate dll's etc, but it still restarts after 45 seconds. PC has all the latest drivers for all components. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

How do you connect to the internet?

If you have broadband with a network card in the PC, it's possible that 'wake on LAN' is turned on and the PC is getting a wake up signal from somewhere.

Long shot in the wind but you might get someone that knows how to check your Power Supply. Had a PC that did exactly that, had to unplug it at night. Took it in to a PC Repairman and he stated, "Bad Power Supply." He removed the old and in with the new. It never did that again.

Hope your problem is solved with less expense and trouble.

Yes I have broadband with an NIC card but the 'wake on Lan/modem' alert is disabled in the bios. I had thought about viruses etc, but I have AVG Pro with the latest def's and aware SE, SpyBot, etc and they didnt find anything, but, my firewall allowed me to only go to the first page of any website and then locked up with 'page not found'. I thought I had found the answer when I discovered 'exename.exe' (blah service) and 'ntsf.exe' (not ntfs) both in the system32 folder and didn't know where they came from. They both loaded on startup as well but once I removed them my connection and speed was back to normal and the system was OK. I turned the PC off (shutdown) but after 2 minutes it started back up again. My power supply is an Enhance 460w and only a year old do you still think it worth getting it checked? Thanks for your help.

I'm not expert enough to know for sure, only gave my experience with such a problem.

Hopefully someone will jump on this in a day or so to give you a better solution.

In your bios what does it say in the power setting after power failed: stay off , restart my computer, last state? If it is the power supply losing power on the shutdown process it will restart if restart or last state is marked. Set it to stay off and see if this helps.

    now shuts down ???

Sorry for late reply - been on holiday. Thanks for all your replies. Tried enabling/disabling everything within power settings in power section of the bios but to no avail, however, installed 'optimized' settings in the 'power' section of the bios (which I had already tried manually) - saved and rebooted and now the PC shuts down and stays shutdown - go figure. Thanks for your suggestions anyway.
