How do I unload crashed programs without doing a full shutdown. Whenever I press control alt delete, the Windows Task Manager appears but when I tell it to end the non responding program, it won't do it. At at that point, I can't even do a restart because the computer won't respond to a shut down command. All I can do is cut the power and restart that way.

Click on the Processes tab and look for an "exe" file that have the name similar to the program you are running. Click on it and click "End Process ". Confirm with Yes.

On occasions you need to be patient - or repeat the instruction to end the unresponsive program several times.

If you have a lot of program crashes you should look at the integrity of your hard drive ....

Start > Run > type in chkdsk /r - note the space. Accept the option to run at the next boot and restart the computer.

Do you have enough memory - 256Mb is minimum, 512 Mb preferred.

Worthwhile scanning your computer for malware and adware using Spybot and AdAware - download via Quicklinks in my signature and update before running. I hope you have antivirus software with the definitions up to date and an active firewall.

As a last resort uninstall and reinstall the problem programs and check for updates on the web.

I have found using the RESET button may be a better choice rather than powering down.

I don't think the Reset is as tough on the machine.
