I have created several system restore points but in the last couple of months I have been unable to use them. They are listed with the description I assigned but after all the churning, it comes back that it did not do a restore. Then I try another earlier one and the same result.
Several months ago, I installed GoBack because I liked it better. I had trouble and tried to re-install it. However, because of originally using Partition Magic, GB will not allow me to re-install it even after using the app they supply to rewrite the boot track.
That's why I went back to System Restore, unsuccessfully.
As a last resort, I have tried to reinstall XP from my OEM recovery disk. Disaster---it will not work at all because the Partition Magic data is still on the boot track even after I removed that partition.
When I get too fed up, I will have to format my boot drive (all my apps and data are on another drive, and restall that OEM XP I cannot install my purchased XP because of drivers on the OEM that I need. Never again will I buy a system with only and OEM boot CD.

XP should have enough generic drivers on board to get you online to download any specific ones you would like to have. Alternatively, you could copy your OEM drivers to cd before a clean reinstall.
How would I know which drivers are the ones I need. After the clean install, of course, they are all gone except for the CD. I am so hesitant about doing that until I am really forced to do. Reinstalling everything twice was such a drag last time I found out I had to use the OEM CD AFTER using the original CD.
Set XP to show hidden files, Look in Windows folder> System 32 for a folder called "drivers". In device mgr, look at "properties" for the path to any specific drivers you are concerned about. I've never wiped an OEM clean and had any difficult driver issues. XP can compensate for a lot of hardware, and the system will allow you to get the drivers you choose to be installed. As an example, my trackball works with the regular 2 buttons immediately after a clean install. When I install its drivers, I can use all the buttons and change settings, as I please. If you have a real XP cd in addition to your OEM cd, this will be a piece of cake.
