Aproblem has been detected and windows has been shut down...

    STOP: 0x0000007B(0xF898563C,0xC0000034,0x00000000,0x00000000)

I am using ASUS P4P800-E Deluxe MB partitioned.I am using Western Digital WD800 SERIAL ATA drive in SATA RAID 1.

Since I am using 98SE and XP in separate partitions,I tried initially using "compatibility mode "with hyperthreading off;then I tried "enhanced mode "with serial ATA as Raid enabled.

When F6 appeared I installed the CORRECT Promise WinXP SATA378 controller but when cptr rebooted,I saw the blue "problem has been detected... "message.

    I can't get beyond that.

I am installing XP PRO upgrade and started from a SATISFACTORY(normal)install of 98SE.

    tks

Yes,I've checked that LONG KB article already.

NEWest MB's are not,in my opinion,as user friendly as old ones.

I was able to EASILY install 98SE with a WD SATA drive connected to a SATA RAID socket on the ASUS board and my intention is to update to XP PRO.I've used the correct Promise SATA driver for XP but after I,in theory, ins
tall it(hit S, enter, see choice between drivers for XP,W2K,etc)and reboot occurs,I get to the point where I see the XP black splash screen and then the blue stop.

I have been able to install XPP using one of the non RAID SATA sockets but the probs occur when I want to install with SATA cable in either of the SATA RAID sockets.I've tried MB(motherboard)enhanced mode, compatible mode, hyperthreading on/off.Incidentally,per ASUS I understand the chip set for the RAID socket is different from that for the non RAID so I installed 98SE with the SATA cable conn to the RAID connector and began(!)installing XPP as an upgrade.

One of the messages on the blue screen refers to viruses;well, at this point everything is still "virgin. "

The particular WD SATA drive IS shown by MS as hardware OK for XP.

I accept that there may be some sort of driver issue ,As I recall there are no settings on the drive and as ment,I can easily use the SATA RAID socket to install 98SE. There are several drivers available:pROMISE SATA378 driver which I think I am installing after Win F6 message,FastTrack 378,and INTEL Raid driver which I assume would not apply to the SATA RAID config.

WD doesn't show any drivers for their drive so the only one avail would be the PROMISE(use Promise chip) SATA378 on the ASUS CD.

I have installed XPP several times in other situations but never have had the problems as with this MB.I'm thinking of using another MB but may also call ASUS and see what they have to say.

    Tks for the suggestion.

If you look here on the BBS you'll find some more people having problems with SATA drives & Windows XP.

I don't have any experience with these drives myself.

    update after ASUS contact

The problem appears to be/have been that when using the WD SATA drive connected to a SATA Raid socket on the ASUS P4P800-E Deluxe MB,the drive was not being recognized.

I thought the driver to use/install at the "F6 point "during XPP install was Promise\378ATA for SATA drives but I guess that driver is for the "main" SATA sockets running under INTEL chipset.Apparently(haven't tried yet),the driver I need for the SATA drive ..when connected to the SATA RAID socket is Promise\378Raid.This was info from ASUS spt.

Interesting that if one uses multiple partitions as I am doing including 98SE,with OS except W2k/XP if you use SATA HDD you can only use one Parallel ATA drive;manual shows two SATA drives in use but from my experience even if only one SATA HDD connected to one of the main SATA sockets ,you can only use one std IDE drive.

I think current MB's have gotten two "high tech-y!"

P.S.Irrelevant but BELIEVE advice as to caution when installing CPU's.I bent few pins of socket 378 when was hard pressing in place and eventually pins broke off when I tried to correct!!I guess as Bill Gates might say,it's only money!!!I broke pins from costly 3.0 Ghz P4.

Upgrade PC with new motherboard on XP SP2 msg STOP 0x0000007b

Thanks for the info via the url, but It tell you to use F6 to install a new driver. But what if you are not doing a new operating system and you only want to update drivers for a new chipset (intel 848P) on a current operating system?
Do you have any ideas how to do this?
    Thanks.

Can you boot into Windows? If so, run the CD that came with the motherboard (I'm assuming you installed a new MoBo?). These CD's will have all the drivers needed.

Yes I am installing a new motherboard. When I bootup XP with the new motherboard which has a different chipset (intel 848P) I get the Stop msg and the PC reboots. I can bootup from the XP CD, but I don't want to install a new copy of XP. Is there a way to install driver? Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

Try booting in safe mode, & installing it there.

It does the same in safe mode.

I fixed my problem. If you are using an existing XP SP2 Operating System and replace the motherboard that has a different chipset like the Intel 848P (ICH5). You will get the STOP 0X0000007B etc. msg, because the vendor ID for the chipset is not in the current registry. When XP boots up it looks for the vendor chipset ID and does not find it, so it tells you "Disk not Accessible or some other msg about the hard drive. What I did was to import the necessary key data for the intel ICH5 chipset. I used the Mergeide.reg which I found on the internet and I added another file newpciintel.reg. I have included the key data below:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\CriticalDeviceDatabase\pci#ven_8086&dev_24D1]
    "ClassGUID "= "{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} "
    "Service "= "intelide "

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\CriticalDeviceDatabase\pci#ven_8086&dev_24DB]
    "ClassGUID "= "{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} "
    "Service "= "intelide "

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\CriticalDeviceDatabase\pci#ven_8086&dev_25A2]
    "ClassGUID "= "{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} "
    "Service "= "intelide "

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\CriticalDeviceDatabase\pci#ven_8086&dev_25A3]
    "ClassGUID "= "{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} "
    "Service "= "intelide "

This fix is for Intel ICH5 Chipset only.
You have to install this code using the old motherboard first before you install the new motherboard.
I hope this helps those guys from going nuts like I did.

Manny - thank you for the update. Now that you've explained the problem it makes sense but I never would have guessed it otherwise.

With a crashing system, how did you manage the registry tweaks?

XP system was ok, so as I said in the previous posting I use the old MB and imported the changes to the registry. Then I switched to the new MB and booted up the system and all was ok.
