Even though I took precautions to prevent this from happening, since I have the SP2 CD, SP2 seems to have downloaded on my computer and I would like to eliminate it since I have the CD. I do not know the name of the file and can not seem to find it. Anyone know where this file is resting? Thanks.
    Any danger of deleting it?

If you allowed archiving upon installation, check the add/remove programs list in the control panel, or open C:\Windows\$NTServicePackUninstall$\spuninst and double click the file spuninst.exe. If you didn't allow archiving, you can't remove it.

SP2 was not installed, it was simply downloaded to my computer. I do not have to uninstall it. But where is the downloaded file that I keep getting asked to install?

    Hello ackerberg,

Try WUTemp a "Hidden File ".

Bring up the drive and from the drive tool bar at the top: Tools > Folder Options > View Tab > Scroll down to Hidden files and Folders and tick Show Hidden Files and Folders. If SP2 is in there it will show a very larg file via properties.

There should be no ill effects from deleting it. However, as with any changes to the System, creat a manual SR point prior to deleting.

It might also be deleted by the install of SP2 from the cd. Don't know for sure though.

    Regards - Charles

Why not just pop the cd in and install SP2? That ought to make MS quit trying to download the update for you. Even though I have a fast cable connection, this example is one of the reasons I don't leave auto-update on.

There is nothing in WUTemp and I've also looked in Windows/software distribution/.... Also did a search on "sp2" but there is nothing 75MB in size.
Anyone know the name of the downloaded file?

    Hello ackerberg,

Even though I took precautions to prevent this from happening, since I have the SP2 CD, SP2 seems to have downloaded on my computer and I would like to eliminate it since I have the CD.

What precautions and what makes you think its on the HD?

One reason that people are hard put to answer about the location is that an update from WU is downloaded, installed, and then the "setup installer" is deleted. So no one really "sees" it.

I would install SP2 from the cd whenever you're ready to do so, that will certainly eliminate the MS AU message, AU will recognize the SP2 install.

Or, when you're ready, install from AU - really shouldn't be any difference and the cd you have is a good backup in case you have to install again, don't have to go thru the download again.

In the meantime, you can shut the message off, there is a "don't bug me" option.

    Regards - Charles
