    Hi,
This has been a tough one to figure out, but a friend of mine's computer which is Windows Xp gets the following error message when the computer boots up:

    16 bit windows subsystem
c:\windows\system32\autoexec NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft windows applications. Choose close to terminate the application

The choices given are to close or ignore. Does not matter which one you choose, access to the Internet is still allowable. This computer has dial up (Earthlink) and is not hampered in any of it's processes. I have checked, startup (msconfig) and see nothing of concern, or in the taskmanager (ctrl-alt-del), or the registry (regedit), or in Add/Remove in the form of spyware, aware, malware, etc.

I ran spyware scanner (from pcpitstop.com), virus scan (from trend micro/housecall) and hijackthis (from CWShredder), and nothing was found.I even followed the instructions by Microsoft to rename the Virtual Device Driver (VDD) in the registry and the same error messsage continued to appear upon boot up.

The owner of the computer claims no new programs have been installed. I am at a loss as to what will correct this problem. Your assistance will be greatly appreciated...Thank you.

I think you may have something amiss in the autoexec.nt file. Open it with Notepad and copy/paste the contents in a post here for review.

Posting such is something I have not done or know the basics in which to do. Can you provide the steps to do so and I will try...

OK, I'll try. First go to the location of the file and double click on it. When the option screen appears, mark the box labeled "Select the program from a list" and then click OK. Then scroll down the list until you see Notepad and double click it. The file should open in a Notepad window. On the Taskbar above click EDIT > then Select All. Then click EDIT again and select COPY. You can now close all those screens out. The info from the file will remain on your Clipboard. Come back to the board here and open a reply in your post. Right click in the message field area and select "Paste." The file contents will appear in the message area. Follow through and submit the post.

You're welcome and thanks for posting back his success. It would possibly help others if you could report the details of the fix if you have them.

    Best regards.

I agree...The only details I have and was not sure if it was enough to post was, a CD that was required according to Microsoft was not available at the time I was there. Some how it appeared and I was not available to do the steps as required and he was...If I am fortunate to get more details, I will be glad to update this post...Thanks
