    Hi there,
Has anybody ever used the tool 'sysprep.exe' on the XPsp1 disk?
With this tool you're supposed to 'seal' your system (all registrykeys are removed). After that you build your HD in your new PC and the system configures itself brandnew !
This means updating your system with new MoBo etc. is a lot easier.
Is this true ? any comments please.
    Adrian

It could certainly be used that way but there are some issues that may cause you problems.

Bear in mind that sysprep.exe is designed to clone a NEW XP install and allow you to replicate it to other machines.

Using it to make an image of a working system may not work. One problem you could (probably would) face is This one but there are others as well.

If you have a PC you don't care about then making an image of one PC and trying to use it to install on the other will tell you if you have a working image.

I do know of one other issue with using a sysprep image. Often times while trying to boot to the recovery console using the XP cd, it will not accept the Admin password. The 6 XP floppy startup disks are required instead, downloadable from MS.

i use virtual pc/virtual server/vmware in my daily activities. I have a 'gold master' sysprepped version of major OS flavors. This lets me make a copy of the master, and power it up, without all those nagging 'duplicate name on the network' problems.

    Check this out:
    http://www.microsoft.com/resources/...Windows/XP/all/reskit/en-us/prbc_cai_vnve.asp

You will be sad if you clone a a shiny new dual proc acpi box, and then try to bring up a sysprep image on a laptop.

The System Preparation tool, Sysprep.exe, is a disk-image-based deployment tool that you can use to install identical configurations on multiple computers
Because the reference and destination computers are required to have identical HALs and ACPI support, you might be required to maintain multiple images for your environment.
