Volume control slider bar - HELP!

The slider bar won't stay up. I have ESS1869 Audio. I do hear sound from my desktop speakers and my touchscreen monitor when I manually slide the bar up. I've tried Microsolft's answer which was in my registry I needed to enable the ESS volume control, well that path at the very end was not as MS said. I've contracted Compaq, they say my computer isn't reconizing the audio controller I followed their steps and still not fixed. No IRQ conflicts, no device mgr. problems. have sound but slider bar won't stay up. Can someone give me some other avenues to try? I would really appreciate it.

Have you tried clicking on start then on run and then
Code:
sfc /scannow
to clean up any system file problems?

Have you tried uninstalling the sound card, which will uninstall/deactivate the problematic audio applet (volume control). Check for latest drivers/application software and reinstall the card and drivers/software.

Also, a long shot, try unticking the show volume in taskbar/notification area? from the sound properties in the control panel. Reboot the PC and re-enable this function.

If the problem is with the default XP audio mixer/volume control then the sfc scan may help.

z28,

I'm having a little trouble understanding what you are talking about when you say 'silder bar'. Look at the attached picture. Are you talking about either of these?
The following questions are assuming you answered 'yes':
Are you basically saying that when you turn your machine on, the volume slider bar is basically set to the lowest possible setting, and you have to manually slide it up to set the volume to a level that is normal?

A possibility.

iroxz28 may be refering to what the left pix in your post shows. I had/have the same problem with the "MIDI" volume slider. I slide it full up and I just found it at half mast again to day.

I am using NVIDIA(R)nforce(TM)Audio Codec Interface. ( onboard audio )

It has done this with both 98SE and XP Pro.

This problem is more than likely caused by a program of some sort that you use for music or video. An example: I use MusicMatch for mp3's. When you turn the volume control up in MM it turns up the wav volume control in the volume control applet. If you turn it up, then close the program, the next time you open MM it'll bump the wav control up to where it was when you last closed it. So, if you turn down the wav control in the volume control applet and then reopen MM, you'll find that the wav control is once again turned up. The obvious work around to avoid this is to set the volume back to where it was before you exit the program. You'll find that some of these programs will control the volume using the wav control and others will use the play control itself to turn up the volume. I've come across a few that will give your choice in the options of the program.

I'd be willing to bet that what's causing your midi control to move is your web page. I just had a look at it and while viewing it, I took a look at the midi volume control. It was set right in the middle. I then closed your page, turned the midi control up and then went back to your page. Guess what. The midi control was once again set back to the middle.

Thank you Zander

I took the same steps and got the same results.

Set Midi at full

Went to my web site ( home page only )

Checked and found Midi set back to half mast again.

Now a question or two.

What is on the home page ( or site in general ) that would make it do that ?

Can someone give me some help to maybe fix it. If it can be that is ?

My guess is that it's the midi file itself. I haven't ever made a webpage with an embedded midi so I'm not really familiar with this type of thing but my guess would be that the volume level is either set in the code of the page or it's just a default thing in IE. Can't really say for sure. Maybe somebody else can help. Gotta go now. If nobody's come up with an answer for you before I get back later today, I'll do a bit of digging and see what I can come up with.
