Sorry for asking a rather silly question. Today I had decided to install the MS Updates that I had downloaded 28 of them (all listed in a previous thread) believing I could install them one or two at a time just to see if there is any problems. So I ticked only the first one that I wanted installed the IE6 KB832894 clicked install and bingo Windows installs it ok up comes thank you and all my list of the rest of the downloaded updates have gone. Where can I find them to install the rest of the critical ones, or do I have to download them again and install them all in one go.
    Many hours on dial up.

    Hi Pete,
I just used the download from the Taskbar where it had been naging me with the screen new downloads are available. I just clicked download and I don't know where Windows had stored them it never showed, I just got the window everytime after bootup reminding me that the downloaded updates are ready to install, and I had put it off by clicking on remind me later.
But now there is nothing after only installing 1 update.
    Any idea

I fight shy of that method - want to know what is being downloaded.

I have auto updates set to notify as it would appear you have and then go to Start > Windows Update and see what Criticals are on offer and install from there.

I suggest you go that route and see if any criticals are offered - if not they were all installed.

As to where they are held on disk by your route - in a temp file in C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\..... I would guess, but maybe no longer.

WinUpdatesList will (should) indicate which hotfixes are installed as will Spybot - Tools > View Report > View Report.

    Hawk,

The confusion here is MS's terminology. What you're descibing is really download and install, done at the same time. So it's normally not importent where MS stored the download "setup" file, the update is already part of the OS.

I use the site that Pete gave the url for - a true download only, to a folder of my designation, to be installed later at my instigation. These are setup.exe files and I keep them permanently.

    Regards - Charles

I went to the site that Pete had given the link for and I did the check on what updates I have installed, and the only one is that particular one that I did just to see on how it will go. The rest of the cricical ones that I intended to install I will have to download again, thats what it looks like to me.
And Charles I picked out 3 critical ones clicked on Install and it started to download but did not ask where to save it too, it was going to be the same again I had no idea in what folder it would have been going. I have a folder called "My Downloads" where I download to, but it wasn't going there. And Windows has no updates folder, not that I can find one anyway.
I know the original updates have to be somewhere as I downloaded 28 of them, and everytime I boot up XP it would remind me that the downloaded updates are ready to install. Unless that the rest of the updates the ones you don't install Windows automatically discards as not wanted.
I really would like to know what happened to my 5hr.of updates downloading.
Yes no kidding 56K dialup 5hr.

    Hi Hawk,

The url that I referrred to is this one http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/catalog/en/default.asp known as the Windows Catalog site and you have to pick your OS and then it displays - theoretically - all the updates available for your OS, whether they are installed or not.

So before going in there, you have to know which updates you want. It also asks, at download time, to browse for a download folder.

    Is this what you did?

The other site - "normal" - scans for updates you don't have, and displays those, and if you pick one or more, it downloads and then installs the updates. I think you should look for a folder called WU temp in WINDOWS. See if anything is in there. AFIK, that's the temp download folder for the updates. You might also look in the Add/Remove for the criticals.

    Regard - Charles

    Hi Pete,

Depends on the category clicked - if I click on Home SP1, I get 11. If Home SP1 RTM, I get 10. If Windows XP SP1, I get 143.

Similar here although substitute Pro for Home. Seems XP SP1 presents the whole list - 143. Very confusing - let's home things are clearer on the new update site

Which is why I keep asking the same question, will the new update site actually inventory your machine and offer updates that may have been uninstalled inadvertantly? Like by SFC or some repair proceedure? I have a problem with MSFT's old "Installation History" site that says "these are the updates that were installed, but they may not still be present on your computer"

I accepted advice that the $$ prefixed uninstall updates files in C:\Windows could (should?) be deleted, which removes them from Control Panel Uninstall Programs listing. So, with current "Installation History" site function, I can't tell which updates are actually installed. I was hoping that a revamp of the site would'nt tell me just what used to be on my machine, but what is actually there and what is currently needed.

AFAIK sfc does not replace files which were replaced by updates as these are stored in the dllcache folder to which sfc refers.

An accurate poll of what's actually installed on your drive can be had by running Aida32

I like it for its other functions as well. It's a nice piece of freeware that may soon be payware.

Thanks Pete, but that still does not answer the question. What bothers me is that part of Installation History on the old update site which states: "may not still be present on your computer" It seems to make it obvious that some updates may be gone, for whatever reason. And it is clear that the old update site can't tell what is still installed and what may be gone.

    Not very comforting.

If I go to Windows Update and click to view prior installations, I'm told that I have not installed anything at all. That's not true but I have not installed through that site.

I have downloaded everything from Windows Update Catalog and clicking to see my download history reveals all that I have downloaded.
When I use Ghost to roll back, the download history is rolled back too and it starts the listing from "square one ".

Windows Update should be able to identify a completely uninstalled update as not installed and offer it to You.

In the registry editor (Start > Run > type:regedit > hit enter) navigate to this key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates
where You should find a list of everything installed.

    I forgot:

Since rolling back using Ghost changes what is displayed, then my bet is that the two sites get their information from somewhere on the local system (Your computer) and there must be a logfile. Find it, rename it and see what happens.
I can't find mine since I probably don't have one.

    Well, I was wrong, I found C:\Windows\Windows Update.log
It contains a number of entries for connecting and checking for updates but since I have set it to notify but not to download, there are no downloads and installs (if there should be any).
I have one C:\Windows\*.log for each downloaded and installed update.
