During startup, after the desktop is already displayed,(Windows XP Home), the following error messages appear: The title of the 3 boxes is Rundll, and they state:" Error loading C:\Windows\bxxs5.dll, the module cannot be found, "
"Error loading C:\Windows\System32\msiefr40.dll, the module..... ", and "Error loading C:\Windows\System32\inetp60.dll, the module....
There is a 4th dialog box titled WJView, the states "Could not execute main:The system cannot find the file specified ".
This is a computer that belongs to a friend, so I don't know its history. She asked me to take a look at it, so I am, as a favor.
Upon shutdown, the rundll32.exe dialog box comes up and states that the program is not responding. Choices are END NOW and CANCEL. Pressing END NOW shuts the computer down ok.
The startup errors each have an OK box that can be clicked, but I don't know the further consequences, if any, of making them go away.
The machine is an emachine, with an Athlon XP 2400, and I see that my friend's son has installed a 9000 series ATI Radeon card in place of a SIS based video processor that was integrated into the motherboard.
Except for the errors, the computer seems to behave ok.
I have an XP pro install CD. I believe my friend bought the computer from Best Buys, and probably has the system restore disks.
Should I merely find the 3 .dll files and place them into the Windows directory, or should I try and repair via a reinstallation? If so, can I try and extract the missing or corrupted files from my XP pro disk?
In late May, I switched from Earthlink to Bellsouth. Please drop me a note at votros@bellsouth.net in addition to a reply here.
    Thanks.

    Hi skaler2k
Well, I wouldn't try putting those files back. They are caused by spyware.
Download and run adaware. Put a check mark beside everything it finds...and let it rid you of it all.
    Then download and run Spybot.
Post back and let us know how it goes.

    xp startup errors

    Hi,
Thanks for the directions. I have downloaded both adaware and spybot, but will check with my friend whether she wants them installed and running on her computer. I'll let you know how it goes.

Please do that. You can always uninstall them once they've been run, but you'll find most members here keep these two programs on their machines and run them weekly.

    Errors during startup

Thanks Daizy. I did run both programs and the computer seems to be behaving normally. AdAware found 1059 "objects" that I deleted. I don't know if this is a big number. I plan to install both programs on my computer.
I have Norton's Internet Security suite, but I guess you can never be too safe. Thanks again for your help. I really appreciate it.
    Vic

Please remember to keep both Ad-aware and Spybot updated - or at least update them before you run. The definition updates are similar to your antivirus updates in that they are updated regularly, in the case of Ad-aware weekly, sometimes more often.

As a companion to those 2 programs I suggest you download SpywareBlaster - update it and 'Enable all Protection' under Quicktasks. This adds another layer of protection to IE and is recommended by the Spybot people.

    SpyBot results, always the same...

Hi again. This may be no big deal, but, I installed, updated, and ran adaware and spybot, and spyware blaster on both my and my wife's computers.
After running spybot search and destroy, I see the same 'DSO Exploits-5 entries" appear after each run, and on both computers. This morning, just for the heck of it, I ran spybot, got the Data Source Object Exploits-5 entries response. I deleted them. Ran the program again-immediately-there they are again. I tried looking through the help files, tutorials, but don't see anything that explains this specific problem, if it is a problem. BTW, both computers have the Norton Internet security 2003 suites on them-all updates are current. Thanks, in advance. Other than that, things are just peachy here in Georgia.
