My card reader for my digital camera was plugged into my other computer, and it didn't have the software installed. Windows didn't like that! It started to reboot itself, four or five times, before it actually loaded. When it did, an error message stating something like, "windows has recovered from a serious fatal error ". Now, if I reboot or shut down the computer, it crashes and reboots several times. Some times I have to shut it down completely, and let it sit for a while. Then, a screen will come up and gives me a choice as to how I want windows to reload...safe mode, safe mode in a network, not sure what others ones, but it also, gives me a choice to reboot to the last known good configuration. That, doesn't always work. I insert the XP disk, and select the repair option. That doesn't seem to help. It still wants to crash and reboot itself, until it is successful in loading windows. Now, it runs very slow. It seems to have some kind of a glitch in the system. I've run the virus check and nothing shows up. Any clue's to what has happened? What kind of fix can I do?
    Thanks,
    Bob

I would first check device manager for and remove anything with yellow exclamation, then reboot.

    Turn off Auto Restart

    Turn off auto restart
    Control Panel/System/Advanced/Startup and Recovery
    uncheck auto restart

With that done, if you still have problems, you should get an error message, so have a look in the event logs. Post back and let us know.

Did you have time to shut off the auto reboot? If not, try to shut it off in Safe Mode. Your event logs are in Control Panel, System, Advanced.

How exactly did you "repair Windows "? Did you boot from the cd?

Yes, I did reboot from the CD. I selected "r" for repair. It ran through the motions, and it didn't seem to help. I did uncheck the auto boot. I then rebooted and it open windows without a hitch. I click on the event log and nothing happens. Is this the log that shows all the errors? I've been there one time, now I can't remember how to get back to it. It seems to be working right now, but haven't had time to check out everything. I'll have more time this afternoon to see if I can get it to crash. Seems like it will crash when I try to open up an application in "tools ". I'll check it out when I get home this evening. Maybe we aren't on the same page with this event log? How do I get to it, and what am I looking for?
    thx,
    Bob

Right click My computer and select manage. Expand system tools then event viewer and check for problems in system and application logs.

Most of the errors and warnings have enough info to allow you to search up an article on the Microsoft Online Help site that may give enough detail for you to figure out exactly what the problem is and a fix, if needed.

Otherwise you can feel free to post some on here for us to have a look at. Open an error or warning, click once on the icon below the up/down arrows (sends a text copy to your clipboard) and paste the info here.

Start with something that looks related, around the time you started having problems.

Why not clear your event logs so you can start with fresh problem info.

Not sure exactly where you got the items you posted though. Has info that isn't usual for event log entries and missing some info that is normally there.

Here is a sample from my PC that is fairly typical.

    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: W32Time
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 29
    Date: 5/28/2004
    Time: 3:37:03 PM
    User: N/A
    Computer: PMUUSWXPLH0NMP
    Description:
The time provider NtpClient is configured to acquire time from one or more time sources, however none of the sources are currently accessible. No attempt to contact a source will be made for 29 minutes. NtpClient has no source of accurate time.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Note that the piece in blue is rarely (if ever) helpful though. Normally just tells you that Microsoft has no additional information there for you.
