Ok, for system power options, logically which should occur first: "system standby" or "turn off hard disks "?

Can they be set to occur simultaneously without any problem?

    IMO

System Standby - Never - (avoids potential problems with coming out of standby)

Turn off Hard Disks - Never - (reduces wear/tear on start up)

Thanks Pete, and I agree with minimizing shutdowns and startups, but typically I like to power down my pc overnight, and am usually here to do that. But, on rare occasions I have been known to go for an afternoon bike ride on the broadwalk, and not make it home until the next day (lots of bars and too many "opportunities "...). When that happens, I would like to have the power options set up to give my pc the night off, and that is why I am wondering if the sequence of the options needs to be taken into consideration.

if thats the case then set it to the max time. 5 hours may not be a lot, but at least it wont turn off hard disks in the middle of a movie or something.

Better yet, on your bike rides, before you leave, put it in standby, that should do the trick.

keywester - you might be better off with hibernate than with standby.

Hibernation: Everything in the computer’s memory is stored on the hard drive. When computer is turned back on (comes out of hibernation), all programs/documents that were running before hibernation are restored to the desktop.

Standby: while in Standby mode, information in the computer’s memory is not saved on hard disk. Any interruptions in power will result in loss of information in memory.

And as a practical matter, most folks seem to be able to go from hibernate to run with fewer problems than with standby.

Note: I never use either so am going only on forum information and other internet postings.

If you have a reliable UPS (uninteruptible power supply) you can just leave it on and go party. In case of power failure, it will shut your system down in an orderly fashion. I also like the way mine levels out the power to my comp- I live in a very old house in a very small village, and brown outs are common. I used to have to replace fried hardware, but the UPC has ended all those troubles. I do NOT use hibernation or standby, either. If I must leave the comp (remember, I have little kids!) Winkey-L locks it until I get back.
