On XP boot-up, everything proceeds normally, including the green-background [no wallpaper] Desktop appearing, but it is bare of all the usual icons. There is a long delay before the icons appear. This started happening just recently on my Dell Pentium 4 desktop computer running XP Home Edition with 512 meg of DDR RAM on board.

My first thought was that Windows is hunting for something that should load at boot-up, but for some reason is taking longer to load than usual--some old app or driver that changed enough to take longer loading or some new change to the system causing the delay. Thing is, I haven't added anything nor made any other significant changes to the system that I am aware of.

Any suggestions on causes and fixes for this aggravating glitch would be much appreciated.

Thanks for your time and consideration.

It may be that your icon cache is too small - if you are comfortable with editing the Registry look here, but export the registry entry first in case of problems.

    http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/57/

There is a reg file around which does this automatically, but I can't find the original source. My cache size is set at 4096.

has an icon repair. Or, you could try a System Restore to a date you know all icons were intact.

This will work if the computer hesitates while windows "refreshes" all of the Desktop Icons. This is because the ShellIconCache file has reached it's limit of 500 entries. To stop this, run Regedit and open the key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer and create a new string value. Name it MaxCachedIcons and then set the value to 2000
