I have an entry in my event viewer that reads Source: redbook, Category: None, Event ID: 10. Description; This drive has not been shown to support digital audio playback. I'll click the MS link and under user action it states: Install new optical drive. How do I correct this? I have a DVD Player and a CD-RW. Thanks in advance.

Does your DVD player have audio when you play a DVD? If it does, I wouldn't worry about it.

If not, open Device Manager (Start > Run > type devmgmt.msc), click on the + sign beside DVD/CD-ROM drives, and double-click on your DVD player. Click on the Properties tab and make sure that the box near the bottom, for "Enable digital CD audio..." is checked.

Cant get DVD to play. It starts then I get send error report to MS. I went to safe mode uninstalled the drivers rebooted the drivers auto installed. No good. I performed a repair install of the OS(xp pro). No good. That was on the suggestion of a tech from MPC(formally MicronPC). He said it sounds like a software issue, but, if the repair install didn't resolve the issue they replace the DVD-ROM drive. I uninstalled Intervideo WinDVD program and reinstalled it. No good. Went to the event viewer: Applications and found this. Application Error, EventID: 1000, Description: Faulting application windvd.exe version 3.1.77.2 faulting module iviaudio.ax 3.1.77.2 fault address 0x00004b85. Any ideas? Does it sound as if the DVD-ROM drive died? If so I can get a new one free from MPC. I can play games and music without any problems. Could it be the Intervideo WinDVD program that's causing all the problems.

Since you say a DVD starts to play, it would seem that it appears OK (without the yellow "? ") in Device Manager, which should mean that it's not a hardware issue. Based on your first post, though, it sounds as though it could be the drive, itself.

One way to find out whether it's your DVD player or WinDVD is to open Windows Media Player, put a DVD in your player, and try to view it with WMP (I have WinDVD 5 gold and Roxio's DVDMax installed, as well). If the same thing happens with WMP, I'd replace the drive.

Tried WMP. Got this message: Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because a problem occurred with copywright protection.

Can I assume that you've tried playing a different DVD?

I think you said earlier that you had uninstalled the DVD drive and reinstalled it, but have you physically uninstalled it? By that, I mean have you pulled the IDE ribbon cable and firmly reseated it?

I'm about out of ideas, here, but how are your drives installed on the IDE buses? Your hard drive would be the primary master, but how about the DVD and CD-RW drives? Ideally, your DVD drive should be the primary slave, and your burner drive the secondary master. You might as well check to make sure the DVD drive is jumpered properly, too.

My best guess, and I'm only guessing, is that you have a faulty DVD drive. Since MPC has offered to replace it, I think you should. If worse comes to worst, you can buy a new DVD drive for $60 or less.

Where on the Island are you?

I didn't build my machine this time. I bought it from Micron PC. So all components were pre-installed. But I check the connections anyway, and everything seems fine. I was thinking if a new DVD software program other than the one that came with the machine which is Intervideo WinDVD. I tried to run a DVD using Auturun a messege came up Cannot find PC friendly Language File\Reinstall itilanen.dll. I tried to reinstall that file and it said it couldn't.

I'm guessing that your machine came with WinDVD 4 gold, rather than the newer v5 gold. I did a lot of research last year on software DVD players, and finally settled on WinDVD 5 because I thought its interface was the cleanest and easiest to use. I haven't been sorry.

If you do want a new player, do your homework first, then either shop online or, depending where you are on LI, go to the computer show this weekend (Sat-Sun, 9:30-4:00) at SportsPlus in Lake Grove (on New Moriches Rd, across from Macy's in SmithHaven Mall), and shop for it there.

They're sending me a new DVD drive. We've tried everything. That's the only thing left to do.

I will let you know how it turns out by posting on this thread. Between the MPC Tech and you. I probably checked all that could be checked to try and resolve the problem. So I guess changing the DVD drive is the only thing left to do. Thank you for all your assistance it's greatly appreciated.

Problem resolved. It was a software issue. I installed different DVD player software. Everything is working fine now. Another tech told me I could have fixed the problem by uninstalling and reinstalling my video driver, Direct X-9, and Intervideo WinDVD V.3.1.77.2. But who knew. Anyway thank you for all your help.
