Upgrade prompt on startup

I have recently upgraded to windows XP and the problem I now have is on startup. When I bootup I get the following message:

Windows detected a DVD decoder that might be incompatible with your system. Select one of the following options:

Upgrade now
Upgrade later

If I click on upgrade now Im taken to a website where I will have to PAY for the upgrade??

Anyone else had this problem?

Harp,
Need a little more info. Is this DVD decoder a hardware PCI decoder card or is it referring to a DVD drive?
What does your device manager say regarding devices installed and errors (if any)
What's the website you're being referred to?
Have you gone to the manufacturers website for updated XP drivers?

Cheers Paul for the quick reply. Im trying to get more info (this isnt my problem its a fiends computer ). I was expecting miracles with the info posted.

The only other thing I can say (still not much use really) is that he has a DVD/CD-rw drive.

I have emailed asking for manufacture, make model and the website directed to, as soon as I get it I will be back.

I suspect that this is not a true Windows message, but possibly a sort of advertisement embedded into some other piece of software with a startup item. What happens when "Upgrade Now" is clicked? You could always try it, being prepared to cancel if a download starts or something undesirable begins.

Download and install Startup Control Panel . Then, go to the Control Panel and click the new Startup applet. Look through those entries to see if anything related to the error message may be starting with the machine.

Sorry again for the delay but heres the important stuff.

He appears to have 2 drives a compaq dvd-rom drd8120b and a lg cd-rw ced 8120b .

Your friend has a version of WinDVD which is incompatible with XP - guess he can't play DVD's on the XP box.

He can either dump it or pay up

On the other hand here is a list of software DVD players, one of which might suit and might be freeware.
