Windows Update

Windows update; I have six critical updates that are the same. Every time I download this update it says it is successful and I reboot. A week later I will check "Windows Update" and the same critical update is back for downloading.

Update Rollup 1 for Microsoft Windows XP (KB826939)

Does this update allow it to be uninstalled? If so, uninstall it, then go into the windows update installation file and delete any reference(s) to it and any subsequent installations. Reboot and next time you online try downloading again.

I think this particular update downloads just the installer first. Then the installer runs and downloads the rest of the components---a rather lengthy download. You may want to just go to Windows Update so you can monitor the progress of the installation.

I went to add and remove...removed the update, reinstalled it, went back a day later and there it was again, went back today, it is there again, I have 10 successful downloads of the same update.

Here is a program that will fix the repeated prompting to download a hotfix that has already been installed:

Your script file did not work...I still get it everytime I go back.
Thanks for trying.

Try downloading the update to your desktop, restarting in Safe Mode and installing it.

I downloaded it to a folder, removed the update from Add/Remove in Control Panel, rebooted into safe mode, installed the patch (when I downloaded it was 9222 kb, it shows up in add/remove as 0.12MB) Rebooted, went back to Windows update and there it was again...

Try renaming your catroot2 folder to catroot2old.

You will need to stop the cryptographic service to do this.

1.) Run: net stop cryptsvc

2.) Find and rename the folder.

3.) Run: net start cryptsvc

And then would I start the process of removing and replacing the file (KB826939) in safe-mode again?

I hate to say "yes" if this turns out to be another wild-goose chase, but I don't think Safe Mode should be necessary if all goes well.

Will renaming my catroot2 folder to catroot2old affect anything else on the computer to mess it up?

It shouldn't. But that is the reason I suggested just renaming it. Good practice dictates that changes never be irreversible.

If that previous idea doesn't work, try removing the reference to that update in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\Windows XP\SP2

Did everything you suggested, shut off all firewalls, etc. Checked registry, Reloaded it and Windows update still says I need it.

I'm out of ideas. You could try once more to remove the registry entry above and also the reference here:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Hotfix

When you remove this hotfix, does it also successfully remove the entry in Add/Remove?
