Try opening a command window. Run: cmd

    Then try sfc /scannow

At least you will be able to read any error messages.

    sfc /scannow

    thanks for the suggestion:
    Here's what is shows:

Windows File Protection could not initiate a scan of system protected files. The specific error code is 0x000006a. [The RPC server is unavailable.

I went to my services and check on this RPC and found that it is running.

Any additional advice would be appreciated.

Thanks again everyone for your help.

This error has been appearing occasionally for me lately, too.

For those few apps that give me this error, closing all other running apps in the tray, and terminating any unused (but recognized) processes in the Task manager, has allowed the program to run.

    Disable anti-virus software.

Hopefully, this error is common enough that someone will get to the bottom of it.

Windows File Protection could not be initiate a scan of protected system files. The specific code is 0x000006ba [The RPC Server is unavailable.].
    CAUSE
This behavior can occur if the certificate for Verisign time stamping has been removed from the computer.
