    Hello:
I need to know the Bare minimum of items running in background as this XP Wonder is too slow on start-up and shut-down
please supply names -abbreviations as i looked and do not have a clue which to keep

Today my 98se(built for 95)/64MB RAM puter 133mhz on Dial-up Consistently pulled up web pages quicker than XP(1 yr old, 1.4Ghz, 256 memory) on DSL
Both Compaq 'puters are almost stock out of the box except for McAfee(please do not tell me to switch to Norton)

You can control what loads at boot easily with this freebie from Mike Lin:
    http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml

and if you want to shut down everything you don't need or use, visit the Black Viper

Post back if you have any questions.

Have a look in msconfig and let us know what's all running (startup tab). We could probably help then. The list is pretty much different on everybodys computer depending on what's all installed on it.

Have a look here . It's a list of programs that run on startup. There's a bunch of numbers at the top of the page you have to click on to get to the one you want. For instance, Coloreal is in the 500-599 group. It's kind of a guessing game as to where they're located but they're all listed alphabetically so it's not to hard to find the one you want. Look in the status column to see if it's necessary or not. This is the key for the status column.

"Y" - Normally leave to run at start-up
"N" - Not required - typically infrequently used tasks that can be started manually if necessary
    "U" - User's choice - depends whether a user deems it necessary
"X" - Definitely not required - typically viruses, spyware, adware and "resource hogs"
    "?" - Unknown

This is a link to the page from where the list comes from.

Maybe it is easier to find things in TASK LIST PROGRAMS

It also includes descriptions and recommendations.
