Safely remove hardware Error

    Two days ago i installed a scanner, packard bell one, works fine, but XP keeps on trying to make me uninstall and remove it.

    Little icon in the task bar on the right, and when i click it, this shows.

    I installed off the CD for the drivers as XP didnt have them, i dont to uninstall it, i just installed it :\

    XP Pro sp1, fully patched.

    Don't worry about it- I got the same icon with my psc (HP). Apparently, it is there because our hardware are USB devices, and if we should want to disconnect them, Windows wants us to do it "safely ", whatever that means!! It doesn't want you to DO anything, so you can "safely" ignore it.

    You can hide the icon if you want to, but I don't think you can get rid of it. I know I tried, but gave up. If you figure out how, let me know.

    Johanna's right. It's normal and supposed to be there. I think it's more for memory card readers, cameras, hard drives etc. From what I've read, it's possible (though not a sure thing) to lose data if you don't use it to unmount the drive before you disconnect it. Can't tell you how likely it is that you would lose any data. The instructions for all USB drives that I have say to use it, so I do.
