A friend messed up her computer. She has XP HE. **** sites were popping up so she downloaded something called C net or See net. Now when she starts up, the windows log in comes up, puts in the password and nothing happens.

How can she restore and how far back can she go?

She cannot get into safe mode

I know it's been down more than five days.

    Hello LadyLuck,

She's going to have to boot into XP using the XP install disc first. See what happens. If that's successful, than try safe mode's "last working" state option.

If that works, A whole gamut of AV and malware scans are going to have to be done. I wouldn't trust the installed one, or at least it would have to be double checked.

    Pick from this site http://www.wilders.org/free_services.htm

    Malware cleaners:
    http://tomcoyote.org/SPYBOT/ SpyBot
    http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/ Ad-Aware

    Update both immediately before scanning.

To get info on System Restore: type it into Help&Support on the Control Panel: where it is - how to use it - how far one can go back.

    Regards - Charles
