I've searched the forum for this precise problem. A lot of threads talk about slowdowns but none as much as this one.
After trying to install my scanner and printer on a new XP 256Mb computer (ten days old... no Internet connexion for the moment - worked perfectly until I tried this installation) the bootup slowed down so much I thought it was hung. If I leave it for 30 minutes I get to login or to desktop in safe mode.
Anything like trying to remove programmes takes just as long.
How can I boot up in Administrator mode?
How can I get back to the configuration before I tried to install scanner and printer?
    Any help gratefully accepted.
    Keith

If you are the sole user you most likely have Administrative rights.
    or
Boot to Safe Mode and log on as Administrator - you should be presented with the choice of logging on as Administrator or as youself as User

Try System Restore, but before you do that look in Add/Remove and uninstall any scanner/printer software and look in Device Manager and uninstall any scanners - see if that resolves the boot problem.

Are you sure that the printer/scanner is XP compatible and that you have XP drivers?

    Many thanks

    for getting back to me.
I'll try starting up in safe mode again to see if I get the choice of logging in as Administrator.
Where will I find system restore?
I'll uninstall the scanner before restoring - needs a lot of patience at the speed it's now working...
Good question about the compatibility - the scanning programme doesn't mention XP... I'll get a better driver.
    Thanks again

    System Restore

Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore - pick a Restore point prior to the problem.
