    Hallo all,
Two weeks into an upgrade from 98SE to WinXP/SP1, and I am
asking myself what's the gain ?
    - less adjustable, rigid
    - 2x the space on the HDD
    - quicker ? I don't think so
    - lots of apps to reinstall - then they work same as before
    - opaque registry
    - lot less info/help on the net

Would you go back to '98 or '98SE if you could ?

    Agree.

I can. Just a case of switching cables from one HD to the Other. 10 minutes tops and I would be back to a very solid and realiable 98SE.

And I did not have to re-install anything other than AV and Firewall. ( I changed same when upgrading ) I put XP Pro right on top of SE.

I would if I had to. With no questions asked.

But then I might be out of luck for new soft or hardware.

If you are using Norton System Works, getting rid of it might speed things up a bit. It did for me.

    I don't agree with that...

Yea, but todays HDD's are 10 - 50 times larger then in 98SE days...

No, on the same hardware,98 will probably be a bit faster

Dunno... I'm all for a clean install, not an upgrade

Hasn't changed much from Win98... I can get around it with my eyes closed...

Already TONS of info on the 'Net, and increasing as time goes by...

    NEVER EVER!!!!!

    Arie - greetings !
See you are an XP fan - so good luck to you.
I still enjoy the peace and quiet of 98SE.
I use about 1 hour per day for checking and maintaining the OS
    - how do you compare with your XP ? I had to use all waking hours just to keep XP pointed in the right diection ...
This was a 2001 release and I am far better off without it.

And I am all for upgrading over existing. Unless absolutley neccessary to do otherwise.

I have only done two clean installs since the days of 95b.

One was my due to my careless use of Partition Magic and FORMAT. AW SHUCKS ( not my actual words of course ) wrong partition. In fact even the wrong HD

The other was another what turned out to be a REAL BAD idea was ME over 98sp1. That was a BIG mistake on my part.

In fact the HD that is in my Wifes machine came from this one. Plugged it in. Booted to the SUD ( not the HD ). Installed SE over 98 and kept right on going. No problems in 1-1/2 years.

Using a little caution and a bit of planning a lot more can be done with Windows OS than Microsoft and many users think.

But again. If upgrading to fix problems especially hardware I say NO. And on that I do stand firm also.

Never in a month of Sundays :)

XP - rock solid, rarely hiccups or crashes, vitually zero maintenance - just the std. cleaning procedure once/twice a month.

98SE was good, but, IMO, XP is streets ahead.

    I got it.

I won't say that I do not like.

But If I were to lose it I would not miss it.

The gain VS cost are no where near as much as going from 98FE to 98SE.

The gain from SE to XP I have yet to find.

But a couple of things to consider.

It may well depend on what the machine is used for.

And for sure does depend on the individual user.

I find XP is a lot more open to customization than 98 was. Done differently but you can control most of it.

I use about 1 hour per day for checking and maintaining the OS
I may use an hour a week. Very similar to 98 but less time required. And so many of the routine housekeeping tasks can be scheduled to automatically happen. I leave my PC up 7x24 so just schedule things for times when I'm not around.

I went from 98 to NT4 to 2K to XP and the few times I find myself back working on or with 98, I get really frustrated at the things that are dead easy on XP and either aren't easy or else I don't remember how on 98 (and NT4 and 2K to some extent).

    Ya know something folks?

I don't think we are really talking about Windows per se.

We are actually taking about what the individual PC ( Personal Computer ) and the USER of same excepts and is happy with.

And therein my Friends lies more MAJOR differences than there is between the Operating Systems themselves. ( Unless you are thinking Windows ME )

I like this or that or do things one way. Someone else likes different things and or does things differently or uses the machine for different things ( which can make a world of difference ).

BUT !!!. We ALL wind up with ( or should anyway ) something that works for us and we are happy with.

As far as I am concerned, other than XP ( which I am beginning to like more but still would not miss it if I lost it ) Microsoft has only made 3 good Windows OS. Win3.11. ( Win for WorkGroups ) Win95b ( OSR2 ) and 98SE. I had no problems with any of them. And each one was an improvement over the previous. I do not mention NT or 2K as I never used them.

    Newt You say
That one sentence says a lot. For you and your use and machine setup it may fit. But for me and my experience it does not. Not the customization part anyway.

For me, Microsoft has only made 2 OS'ses that are OK (provided you keep up to date with all patches!): W2K and XP

    ????

If I use 1 hour a week it is a lot!

It took me a while to get used to XP too, coming from W2K... but then again, I'm using my computer 10-16 hours a day, so probably get used to it faster then if you only use it a few hours a week...

I have used nearly every OS MS put out: Win 3.0, 3.11, 95, 98, Me, 2000, XP.

Only 2000 and XP have been rock solid. I had less then 5 "blue screens" on W2K in 4 years, and only 1 such on XP.

    Thank you Arie.

    Personal use and preference again.

I would be wlling to bet $$ that you use your PC(s) in different way than I do. For your use the two OS you mention may be better. For me I do not need them.

I find XP to be be better for Internet. But for OLDER game playing etc. 98SE is better.

We play Golf ( Links LS 2003 ) with a Friend in Canada every Tuesday evening. I find XP to be better there. But for my every day use and our game playing between machines SE is just as good if not better. Although XP ( and me ) has ( have ) setteled down and is ( are ) doing better. I experimented with the Compatability settings.

Same with me in 98SE or XP Pro.

UNLESS, I as the user mess up. Then it is of course it becomes a different story.

But I do find that XP does do a better job of making its own repairs. A couple of times I have had problems I took the advice of a Friend and LEFT IT ALONE. On the next restart the problem was gone and has not been back since.

AW yes. Blue Screens. I have not had one in XP yet. I have had two complete locks ups. But guess WHO caused them ?
