Is there to disable the scandisk in Windows XP after a bad shutdown? In Win ME you could do it using the msconfig utility but I see no such thing in the msconfig utility of Windows XP. Anybody knows how?

    Why ?????

Would you want to disable that. ?

It is an important part of keeping down problems.

    Hello chuayw2000,

Another question is why so many bad shutdowns to make you want to dispense with scandisk?

To answer your question, I know of none.

I do not think scandisk exists in XP.

It is now " chkdsk "

    Open My Computer

Right Click on a Drive letter.

    Select properties.

    Select Tools.

    Select check now.

However C: drive will not check from there. It needs to be set so that it runs on the next restart.

    Message comes up saying that.

The other partitions will check right from My Computer.

This is a lesson leraned in the last 10 minutes.

chkdsk can also be run on ALL partitions by opening the COMMAND PROMPT and typing CHKDSK [drive letter]:

    such as

    chkdsk d:

You can also see on screen the drive info by doing it this way.

chkdsk /? bring up the help info.

Just make sure you type EXIT to get out of ( close ) the Command Prompt window.

    BillyBob,
Thank you, for simplifying the instructions. They worked just great for me. I have a question, at the end of CHKDSK the summary goes by so fast I cannot read what the scan did. Do you know someway to correct this?

I would also like to try your second CHKDSK suggestion but, I need help again. would you simplify the instructions. Sure would appreciate it. :)

Yes it does FLY by too fast.

Do a Start~Program~Accesories and you should see Command Prompt.

    Open that.

When the screen comes up and at the ( mine says )

C:\Documents\Settings\Bob> Here is where you type chkdsk C: ( or any drive letter ) and press enter.

Just keep a space between chkdsk and the drive lettter.

It will then do its things and all info will be on the screen.

Again. When done type EXIT to close the Window

As long as you type EXIT there is no probelm with using the Command Prompt.

If you used Win98 and used the MS DOS Prompt, Command Prompt is the same thing. Just a different name.

As to why I want it disabled, it is simply soo annoying and my harddrive is about very full and it takes very long to scan and sometimes my computer crashes, reason unknown, and so I want to disable it.

Do you have a large size HD and all in one partition ? My * WILD * guess is yes.

As to the HD being quite full. That may be creating problems and/or crashes. And shutting down chkdsk is not going to help that at all.

It may be annoying but will be much more annoying if you shut chkdsk down so that it can not fix any possible errors after a bad shutdown. The most common error is free space. And that can cause probelms if not corrected.

Shutting down chkdsk will not fix that either. Might just make it worse.

We went through this same discussion some time ago about scandisk in 98. The overall concenses was to NOT shut it down.

    BillyBob,
Using Command seems to be easier and faster.
Does it do the same job as going through My Computer...... etc or do I need to use both ways?
I noticed that in Command I can fix problems automaticaly. How do I use the /F to do that?
Thanks again for staying with me on this. :)

Guess what ? You and I are learning at the same time here. I had never run chkdsk as such till this post. And decided that this would be good time to have a go at it.

    Yes to faster.

I believe it does do the same job.

Both ways ? I do not think so.

If I read correctly the /F switch will fix problems.

    You are welcome.

    BillyBob,
Glad to know someone else has a problem with this but knows more about what He's doing than I do.

Have any idea on how or where to apply the /F switch?

    BillyBob,
Nice to know somone with more smarts than I have is working on this with me.
How or where do I use F/ ? Because I get this:
"Errors found, CHKDSK cannot continue in read-only Mode. "

"Warning! F parameter not specified. Running CHKSDK in read-only mode. "

So the question is where to insert F/ ?

It seems in order for CHKDSK to fix the errors F/ has to be inserted some where, but how and where?

I will take a shot here as I am having problems posting also.

    While at the command prompt I typed;

chkdsk C: /F I got a message that I could not do that as the volumne was in use. But could be set to do on the next restart.

I will see what happens there later.

    I typed chkdsk D: /F

    And it worked.

Gotta go shopping will check back later.
