I want to remove programs from my start up menu. In Win98, I just ran msconfig then unclicked the items in startup. In XP the computer keeps telling me that I've messed up and need to return the configuration to the original. I'd like to get rid of some of these unnecessary programs, like MS Instant Messenger (what a nuisance). Any suggestions?

    Hi Barry!

Go to the BlackViper webpage about Services Configuration in XP. There are hints on what is needed and what can be disabled and how. I did it yesterday.

    See: http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm

I checked out this site and it says to disable msmsgs using msconfig, yet this just brings up that error message. What are the steps to remove this?

lets try again. ( I messed up the first time )

The Black Viper site says under "Notes for a Happier Computer and User. "

DO NOT use "msconfig" to disable services. Type "services.msc" in the Run Box instead

I did run services.msc. Windows Messenger is not there. If you read more on that site, it says that msmsgs needs to be removed using msconfig. Has anyone ever actually accomplished this?

I can not find that statement but at the top he clearly states:

This message is emphasized by highlighting in white.

I´d suggest that You restore the original settings in msconfig and then go to services.msc and follow his suggestions for SAFE settings.

You can also get there via Controlpanel > Administrative Tools > Services.

Barry, Msconfig can't be used to remove a program, only keep it from starting.

If Messenger - MSN messenger right? - if it is not in the Add/remove listing, this will do the job http://www.softnews.ro/public/cat/10/17/10-17-4.shtml XPAntispy.

If it is XP's Messenger service:

To shut down messenger service: start > run > type in services.msc. Scroll down to Messenger, double click and in the startup type drop down menu of the properties panel click on either manual or disabled.

Another way, always more than one, start > type msconfig > services tab > scroll down to messenger and uncheck the box next to it.

BB is correct to say that unless you know what the service's dependancies are, bringing up the properties panel of the service is the best way to shut it down.

Christer, I think Barry means MSN messenger, the chat client, not XP's messenger - what a nuisance with these MS names!

    Yes, I´ve discovered my mistake.

I found out that the process msmsgs is running on my computer, occupying some 2MB, despite the facts that:

In Windows Messenger "Start when Windows starts" and "Allow to run in the background" are UNticked.

In Outlook Express "Auto login to Windows Messenger" is UNticked.

I don´t want to get rid of it since I use it on rare occasions but when I tell it to NOT start it shouldn´t.

    Barry, sorry about the confusion!

    That also applys to Win98.

Msconfig could be used to stop something from loading but would not actually remove it.

I was just messing around with msconfig ( in XP ) and unchecked some things.

On Restart I got a nice impolite message that I was in Selective startup. I used to get the same message in SE.

It is amazing how XP can be so much different but yet so similiar to SE.

    Charles,
Thanks for leading me in the correct direction. The answer is as follows:
To totally remove it from coming up in the task bar, go to task manager (rt click the taskbar) , click processes, highlight the program, then click End Process.
To stop it from opening up every time you go on line or open Outlook Express, double click the icon on the task bar, click tools, options, preferences, then unclick Run This Program When Windows Starts. Open Outlook Express, click tools, options, general, then unclick Automatically Log On To Windows Messenger.
That will fix it for anyone else who finds these programs to be a nuisance.

Your very correct Barry, unticking the numerous locations will prevent program load at startup and I've done this myself. BUT on the rare occasion I use it (mostly to send files), when your done, "sign off ", then "close" the program, then "exit" the program in system tray to kill the icon. I've learned when you don't takes these extra precautions, it can sometimes auto-magically end up back in the startup list.

I don't know if it is the same for windows 98 as it is for windows xp but all I had to do to disable it in windows xp is insert windows xp cd go to "CONTROL PANEL ", "ADD REMOVE PROGRAMS ", "ADD REMOVE WINDOWS COMPONENTS" go down the list and uncheck "WINDOWS MESSENGER" then click next and the system removes the program.

    Rod,
I know I can totally remove it. I was looking for a way to have access to it, if I wished, yet, it wouldn't bother me when I wasn't interested. For the most part it stays hidden now, yet it still is on the task bar, so I assume it is consuming some energy, even turned off. Why can't it just be in the normal program menu to be accessed when people wish to access it?

I read about this yesterday on Doug's Windows Tweaks and Tips.

Among other things he states that changes to Windows Messenger affects Outlook Express.

    Have a look!

    Christer,
I did his quick fix and it removed Windows Messenger from my hard drive, even though it was just supposed to disable it. It's easy enough to replace it, if I ever decide to use it. Thanks for the link.

Thanks, that's exactly what I was looking for. I missed the check box in Outlook Express. P.S. It's also on the bottom of the "Other" tab in Outlook.
