    Hi

Well I decided to up grade my pc windows Me to Xp, but it seams that it generates an error " code 28" About sound System Drivers.

Does any one knows what can I do to fix this problem. Now I dont have any sound in my computer.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi aljavo

XP is VERY picky about drivers. You will need to find out what sound card you have (Aida32 can help identfy card) and find a driver update which is XP compatable. Also go into your device manger, any yellow exclamation marks.? This is a driver loading errror / device not detected type error message.

    Thanks Dennis:

Yes I found a couple of yellow marks.
The sound card I think is a ESS PCI ALLEGRO (WDM) this sound card came with the PC ( Compaq presario 4110 LA).

Do you know where Could I fins a Driver UpDate For this.

    Thanks again

    Thanks.

You are right, I also foound this card and download it, every thing go Ok but at the end a message appears " Driver Not Found ", and the promblen still there.

    Am I doing something wrong?

In the other hand when I see the audio hardware in my computer, appears the Ess Allegro Card thats why I think this is the one that I have.

I take a look at the page that you told me; one question how would I know which one is tha one that I have.

As you would see I´m a beginer.

    Thanks

The ESS page has only one driver for the ESS Allegro for XP, on the far right. The Allegro appears to be a combo modem/soundcard. Is this the one you have? (The modem and sound connections will be together on the same card on the back of the computer.)

If you are up to it, you may want to actually look inside the computer (or at least the back). Many techs don't seem comfortable working on Compaqs, and recently I had 2 that had new sound cards put in when the onboard cards worked fine.

Tape was placed over the jacks for the onboard sound. I suspect this was because the tech couldn't find a Compaq driver and found it easier to just install a new card.

If you try the ESS driver, just unzip it to a folder on your desktop and run the setup file inside.

I dont think that the card is a Combo of sound and Modem, this because last month ( before the xp up date) I have to change the modem card because it broke down and I put a new one.

I agree with you with the idea that my card is the one that you told me in the Compaq page, I have run the auto analysis and it told me that ADI Sound Max Ac97.. is the one that I have... but why at the end of the installation told me " Driver not found "

    Can i do something else?

In the other hand when i was installing Win Xp a cuople of files couldnt be install. wdmavd.drv, wdmavd.sys and ipnathlp.dll, do you think that this have something related with my problem.?

    Again thanks for your time

Those particular files are not listed in my Device Manager under Driver Details for that card. But, they certainly appear to be sound-related.

Try putting in your XP CD. If it autoruns and the window pops up, just exit. Be sure you are online.

Then, go to Device Manager, right-click those yellow problems, and Update Driver. Let it autosearch the CD and the internet.

(If you have a firewall, it may ask for "Run a dll as an app" or "Rundll32" permission to access the internet, so give it permission.)

    EDIT---
Only the last of those 3 files is on my system. It is a NAT helper file. If you have no connectivity problems, it is probably unnecessary.

If that doesn't help, open up AIDA32 again and look under Multimedia, PCI/PNP Audio and see what it says.

I'm not giving up yet, unless you are, but, yes, another sound card will work.

I'm trying to download that huge Compaq thing now to see what it is made up of, but am getting slow connections to that site.

In the meantime, you could try downloading the driver-only package from Avance (now Realtek) and seeing if that will install. Here are 3 url's. One is Hong Kong, one China, and one the US. One sometimes works better than another, and it is a lot smaller than that 25+ meg Compaq thing.

    ftp://152.104.125.40/pc/ac97/alc650/wdm_a347.exe
    ftp://210.51.0.225/pc/ac97/alc650/wdm_a347.exe
    ftp://61.222.72.122/pc/ac97/alc650/wdm_a347.exe

That KB article refers to an upgrade from Windows 2000. It doesn't seem relevant here, in any case.

Let's clean things up and then reinstall.

If C: is your system drive, click it in My Computer and look for a folder with the Compaq sofpaq name: Compaq\sp19611. Delete that folder.

Now open Device Manager and right-click and Remove any sound-related drivers, including the ESS ones and any others listed under Sounds, etc. If you are prompted to reboot, cancel for now.

Check the size of that Compaq download (SP19611.exe) and be sure it is around 25 megs. Then run it. It should deposit the driver setup files into a folder, C:\Compaq\SP19611, that it makes.

Then, the driver setup program should start by itself. If it doesn't, go into that folder and run setup.exe from there.

If all this goes without problems, reboot the computer. If there are any error messages, note what they are and where in the process they appeared.

If that is a PCI Modem ( especially one of the WinModem type ) then it * MIGHT * be the probelm with the Audio.

A Modem WILL stop the Audio from settting up properly by using an IRQ that the AUDIO needs. And a Modem can ( and has ) stop(ed ) sound card drivers from installing properly.

I would be willing to bet that if you were to pull the Modem out the audio would be fine.

Very possible. Especially if they happen to be audio drivers.

Even WAY, WAY back on the old board Compaq had problems with Modems and sound. When changing the OS.

And also so did many other machines and OS. This is not strictly a Compaq problem. It can happen with most any machine and/or OS.

Make sure that you are accessing the correct model number.

Ex. I have a Presario 5000 Series but the model number is 5SPXE1 and not the Model 5000. There is a big difference if you pick the wrong model even though it is in the same series..I recently had the same problem so make sure the model number you input on the compaq driver site is accurate.
