My old computer stopped working -- wouldn't boot and nothing would appear on the monitor. So I took the hard drive out and installed it in a hard drive enclosure. I attached this enclosure to my new computer via firewire. (The old hard drive is NTFS formatted. Both old & new computers use Windows XP Home.) All of the folders on the old hard drive still exist, but I can't open any of the ones under the Owner's "Documents and Settings ". I get an "Access Denied" message. Searching on this forum and in the Microsoft Knowledge Base, I learned that I need to go into Safe Mode, right-click on the folder, click on Properties and click on the Security Tab, and then "Take Ownership" of the folders. But the problem is there is no Security Tab! How do I access all of my old files? Do I need to upgrade to Windows XP Pro just to get a Security Tab? Someone mentioned trying a product called Drive Image. Does that really work -- i.e. get me access to my old files? What am I missing here? Thanks in advance!

Hi zbnj - and Welcome to the Board :)

Not sure if I can help you on this, but a few thoughts -

I guess you refer to the KB article 308421? Did you log on as Administrator in Safe Mode?

If you did and had no success my guess is that your old hard disk does not recognise you as the Administrator as it came from another m/c, even though you were Administrator on that m/c also.

Have you tried copying those files to your new PC?
NO - 308421 refers to both Home and Pro
Yes - and No. Drive Image does just that - makes an image of a drive for restoration or backup purposes. You already have the original drive - Drive Image would merely replicate what you already have!

Or look here under S = Security Tab

That's about as far as I can go - hopefully someone else will chip in.

PeteC, thanks very much for your post! You helped me solve the problem by clueing me in to an error I had made. KB article 308421 says log in using an account that has administrator privileges, so I had logged in with my own user name, figuring I had administrator privileges. Well, that wasn't good enough. When I logged in as "Administrator" in Safe Mode, the Security tab showed up under folder Properties, and I was able to take ownership of the needed folders. So, for anyone else that has this problem, be sure you log on as "Administrator" in Safe Mode. Thanks again!

Glad to hear that it was sorted that simply. Thanks for posting back.
