My system has slowed up a great deal. I had Norton Speed Disk running for 24 hours and it only EXAMINED 5% of my 80G drive.

The Norton help site suggested discontinuing the XP Fast Search that I had only installed recently but I cannot find the way to do it.

    tenbob,
I asume you mean the following?

click on my computer and then right click on your C (main system) drive and select properties and untick the "Allow indexing service to index..." box.
    Regularly delete internet temp/history files.
Go into C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings and delete all that is allowed in the Temp folder also on a regular basis. Check the WINNT/Temp folder and clear the contents that are allowed also.
Do a search using the following files string and delete all that windows allows *.old;*.bak;*.tmp;*.gid;*.dmp
Any dump files created at the time of a BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death) or fatal error may be somewhat large from 64K up to the amount of memory you have installed. Delete them.

In system properties|performance options select custom and turn off most of the useless eye candy. I use only the following, which still retains the XP theme. I also turn off those annoying fade effect on the start menu as well.
    show windows contents while...
    smooth edges of screen...
    use drop shadows for icon...
    use visual styles on...

Use a couple of registry cleaners over the system and use the defragmenter programme after all of the above has been done and use it on a regular basis.

These things will speed up the system performance greatly!

Thanks Paul. I will file that away for the future.

In this case, I think indexing was not the problem. I had installed Pitrinic's Macroworks which allows setting up single key macros to do a string of keyboard and/or mouse actions. I removed it and things speeded up.

It must have been doing a lot of polling which took up time and effort. I have notified Pitrinic about that and will see what happens
