For some reason my Windows XP Pro has stopped making automatic system restore points. I can open System Restore and create a manual point, but no automatic restore points are there. If I don't create manual restore points, no restore points are ever made, even when installing applications or rebooting. The System Restore properties indicate that both drives are bing monitored and the System Restore disable box is not checked. I tend to keep my Startup routines fairly meager using msconfig and turning off all but the most important routines. Any chance I could have disabled some sort of scheduler? Thanks for the help.

    Hi David - and Welcome

Suggest you look here and here and here and here

Alternatively search the board in the XP forum.

Incidentally do not use msconfig to disable services - type 'services.msc' in the run box instead - see here

    Pete,
Thanks for the reply. I had already checked out some of the sources you provided, but help is always appreciated.

Question: Are restore points wiped out when a Microsoft Windows Update (not an upgrade) is installed? I think I get about three updates per week! :))

I did go thru the tests you suggested and System Restore is running and in fact created a restore point today when I installed a new scanner. As I mentioned, I have no problems creating a manual restore point. I guess I wait and see at this point.

BTW, is it possible to change the frequency of automatic restore points?

    Thanks again.
    Dave

    Hello David,

"Question: Are restore points wiped out when a Microsoft Windows Update (not an upgrade) is installed? I think I get about three updates per week! "

    Should not!

"BTW, is it possible to change the frequency of automatic restore points? "

The default is every 24 hours. This can be changed thru the registry here : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Current version\SystemRestore

Change the value of 86,400 seconds up or down.

Also by default, SR deletes restore points after 90 days = 7,776,000 seconds.

    Regards - Charles

    David,

Charles posted while I was composing my reply - thanks, Charles - and you taught me something too !

One final point from me - check that System Restore is set to Automatic :

Start > Run > type in services.msc > Ok. When Services starts scroll down to System Restore in the RH pane and check that it is set to Automatic.

System Restore can be suspended if you run low on disk space and also see MS KB 299904 - The System Restore Utility May Be Suspended on a System Drive Even Though There Is Enough Disk Space

Thanks for the help. I will definitely try to change the frequency of my System Restore backups with the registry tweak hint. Right now I have to wait 24 hours to see if the automatic feature is working.

None of the Knowledge Base articles that I have seen so far seem to apply to my problem. I have tons of disk space. System Restore is active and automatic. I'll keep you posted.

BTW, I seem to be having trouble following links from WindowsBBS using IE. Whenever I try one, IE locks up. I haven't noticed this when following links from other pages...and everything works fine using Netscape 7. Any ideas here?

I went into the Registry to change the default frequency of the auto restore points. I did not have an entry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Current version\SystemRestore...however, there was an entry for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\SystemRestore. Any significance here? That is where I made the time change.

The only other Registry reference to System Restore was at :

    MyComputer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\
    Windows\CurrentVersion\Applets\Regedit

For what it's worth, I'm using Windows XP Pro and my two drives are formatted NTFS.

Win XP is effectively Win NT 5 - hence the reference - which you found.

    Confusing, isn't it ;)

    Hi David,

Sorry, left the NT off. The original is for FAT32, and I did know that
    and forgot.

Interestingly enough, I got a System Restore checkpoint at 3:11 pm today exactly 2 hours after resetting the Registry setting.

Kind of reminds me of that old story about Windows. "If your car operated like Windows, it would just stop unexplainably every now and then on the Interstate. You would push it over to the side of the road, restart it, be happy that it was working again and head on down the highway...without giving a thought to the fact that it would probably fail again in a day or two. ";)

Any thoughts of why I'm having trouble following WindowsBBS links when I use IE 6 but have no trouble with NS 7?
