standby system failed

    In the morning I received the following message STANDBY SYSTEM FAILED " the device driver for the Comm Port (com1) device is preventing the machine from entering standby. Please close all applications and try again.If the problem persists you may need to update the driver. "

    My HP 710 Printer was also not functioning.

    I recently bought a new Dell with Windows XP. HP sent me a disc with new drivers and it works fine except when the computer goes into the standby mode.

    Your original problem was that the com port had activity that prevented the PC from entering standby. Your closing statement was ".... it works fine except when the computer goes into the standby mode .... "

    Will it now go into standby or not?

    If "not" and you want it to, a check of the event logs might give you more information to go on. But if it's new, it should be a problem Dell needs to address - or maybe HP again. Interesting question if the printer was bundled with the PC by Dell.

    It could also be software related. I have a Win2K system here, and as soon as I install Quicken, I get that same error if I try to hibernate the system. Uninstall Quiken and it returns to normal... Haven't tried installing it on my XP system though...
