    My neighbor has a brand new Dell 8200 series system. It won't recognize program CD's. It will recognize DVD's and Music CD's but not program CD's. What could be the problem?

    When you say "It won't recognize Program CD's ", do you mean to say that these types of CD's don't auto start when put into the CD Drive?

    If that is the problem, is your neighbor logged on as a user with Power User rights or logged on as an Administrator?

    The following knowledge base article from Microsoft, explains why you must be logged on as one of these two users to be able to autostart program or installation CD's.

    If he is logged on as a Power User, or Administrator, then check your .INF extension settings to see if it is set to Install.

    To do this open Control Panel, click on Folder Options, click on File Types tab, scroll down until you see the INF extension, highlight this, click on Advanced, and under Actions make sure that Install is one of the actions listed.

    In my XP system the INF extension has the following options listed under Actions; Install, Open and Print.

    If Install is not listed click on New and in the open window type Install in the Action window and in the Application used to perform action type the path to the windows install command. In my system the following is the path and command;

    C:\WINNT\System32\rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 %1

    Hope this is what you were looking for. :)
