A few programs on my PC were wided out with a virus!

The virus is now dead but I need to get a few programs back like Paint and WordPad WITHOUT reinstalling.

Can anyone tell me if you can just download these programs?

    Thank you

    Gary

You should be able to get Paint back by going to Control Panel>Add & Remove Programs>Add or Remove Window Components, then highlight Accessories and Utilities and click on the Details button, then highlight Accessories and click on the Details button once again. Scroll down to the entry for Paint. If it's checked, uncheck it, click the OK buttons until it tells you Paint is removed, then repeat the process, checking the Paint entry to reinstall it.

Wordpad is a little more difficult. I have NOT tried this but by all accounts, it should work.

First, the sysoc.inf file must be edited so Wordpad will be listed in Add/Remove programs. To do that, open the SYSOC.INF file in the Windows\INF sub-directory (e.g. C:\Windows\INF). Scroll down to the line, "MSWordPad=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,wordpad.inf,HIDE,7" and remove the word "HIDE," leaving both commas intact.

Wordpad should then appear on the Add/Remove Programs list (might have to reboot for change to take effect) and when you click on it, hopefully one of the options you'll be given is to repair it.

If that doesn't work, try doing a search for "wordpad.inf" and, when found, right click on it and choose "install. "

    Thank you,

I used your method to get paint back and also many other programs I thought were gone for good (like the games... Yay!)

I used another method to get back WordPad as yours looked hard. I mearly right clicked on a file and selected "Open with..." then selected WordPad. WordPad couldn't be found but a form appeared that reinstaled it for me!

    Thank you very much

The only thing I need back now is the Windows XP Tour to have every program back (that I can spot).

    Any ideas how?

    Thank you

    Gary

    XP Tour?

I'm not quite sure why you would need (or want) to re-install XP tour. Seems that your hard drive space could be put to much better use. :D

I didn't know about the "do you want to reinstall" thingy when choosing a Windows application through "Open with "....thanks for the information. :)

Hmm....I can't find any way to uninstall the tour so perhaps it's still there. It should be on the Start Menu>Accessories, "Tour Windows XP."

If it's not, go to Start>Help and Support>What's new in Windows XP (third listing on the left), then click on "Taking a tour or tutorial" in the left-hand pane. "Take the Windows XP tour" should be the first thing listed in the right-hand pane and should start up when you click on it...or might even prompt you to reinstall it. ;)
