Deleting files relating to Hoax Virus!!

"I currently am running WinXP SP1 home edition. I received an email yesterday advising me that the sender had unknowingly sent me a virus contained in file JDBGMGR.EXE.
I followed the instructions in the email and deleted all copies of this file from my hard drive. I believe there were four of them. Three of them had a teddy bear icon and the other one had a square icon. Unfortunately, I also removed these items from my recycle bin. I did not make note of what folders contained these files and since then I have been advised that this whole thing was a hoax. According to Microsoft's web site: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[LN];Q322993
I will now have to reinstall SP1 (which I can't do through windows update) in order to reinstall Microsoft VM. There are instructions on McAfee's web site regarding how to restore the actual file: http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_99436.htm
but I don't know if these instructions will work since I found 4 copies of it.
If anyone who is also running WinXP SP1 home edition can let me know exactly where this file is located on their HD and how many times, I would greatly appreciate it. I know that microsoft states that this really isn't a critical file but I have also read that deleting this file can cause IE6 to crash and some java applets will not run correctly. Any info in this subject would be greatly appreciated.
Also, would running a repair on IE6 SP1 reinstall the file- I'm not sure if it's included with IE or not.
Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

The Debugger Manager for Java can be reinstalled from the XP CD.

Go to Start--> Run.

Type:
expand D:\i386\jdbgmgr.ex_ C:\Windows\system32\jdbgmgr.exe

where "D" is your CD-ROM drive letter, "C" is your hard drive letter, and "Windows" is your installation folder (the location of the system32 folder).

Click "OK".

Returning this copy will be enough. It will eventually be copied to the dllcache, LastGood.

To Abraxas:
Thanks so much for the reply.
I am still confused, as these instructions are so different from what the other sites have said.
I was so stupid to do this, but it certainly has taught me a lesson!!
Thanks again, much appreciated

The instructions at this site ( http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_994...alInstructions ) accomplish the same end as the ones I gave you. Either one should suffice if all you did was delete that one file.

In the future, refer to Symantec's site or another AV site to check the validity of these claims.

This particular one has reached the exalted status of "urban legend":

To: Abraxas
Thanks again for your help, hope I don't mess up trying to get this file back. Being a newbie, it makes me very nervous.

Well, if "C" is your hard drive and "D" is your CD-ROM, all you need do is copy and paste the line from my post into the RUN box. And there is very little that can go wrong. Even if the file went to the wrong place, it wouldn't hurt anything.

Afterward, do a search and see if it is in your system32 folder. Then, you're all done!

Chances are you will never need this particular file anyway, but recovering it is good practice and will fill that sense of loss, of something being incomplete, that I, at least, would feel

Bite the bullet and let us know

Lucy - two more points.

You can for $10 order SP1 CD-ROM from MS. Not clear on why you think you need SP1 installed again, but the CD is a good idea to have.

Next - when you go to the MS update site, take note of your update numbers. Instead of continuing with the update - look in the left frame and click on "personalize my update". This will take you to a page where you have the option to download to a folder set up for the purpose the updates for later installation. The same patch can be downloaded multiple times.

Regards - Charles

Thanks Charles:
The CD for SPI sounds like a very good idea!
When I tried installing from Windows Update, I failed three times, also being on dial-up would have taken me hours!!
Also will take note of your other advice.
Thanks so much
Lucy

P.S. To Dad, there's many of us out there who are so paranoid of viruses, that we lose our heads & don't think these things through!! By the way, were they able to retrieve the file???

Hello Lucy,

I don't think you have a program like GoBack or you wouldn't have posted. But you do have XP's System Restore, unloved as it is, look here System Restore vs Go Back

If you haven't disabled it, see if you have a checkpoint prior to your deletion of the files. If so, restore to that point, copy out the files, then restore back to the present.

To save you grief in the future, when you install anything, take a manual restore point before and after. Great way to get out of disasters.

Regards - Charles

If Abraxas or Charlesvar is around, still trying to reinstall the file jdbgmgr.exe, but with no success!! Have tried every option available, & still now success. Don't know what to do next.
Like you said Abraxas, bit the bullet, well I've bitten the bullet several times & I am just about to give up.
Does anybody have any more suggestions on this!!
Thanks again
Lucy

Well, Lucy , can you explain in detail what you have tried?

What are the drive letters for your hard drive and your main CD-ROM drive?

If you get any error messages, what are they?
