I'm new to XP and was curious about duplicate entries showing in the "process" task list. The only "Application" listed during this view is Netscape 7.0. Keep in mind my XP is connected to a router for shared internet connection with a w95 computer. The same router provides the network bridge between the XP and w95.
    DUPLICATE ENTIRES LIST

    rundll32.exe ---- Two Entries
    user name ------ Dennis

    svchost.exe
user name --- System ----------- Three entries
user name --- Network Services -- 1 entry
user name --- Local Services ----- 1 entry

Should I be concerned about these duplicative listing. Over-all the computer runs great.

svchost.exe - nope. Normal behavior and nothing to worry about.

svchost.exe is really only a shell that wraps around and runs a number of similar processes. Usually 1 to 4. Your system will create as many svchost.exe wrappers as it needs to operate properly and you may see anywhere from 2 to a dozen of them. It looks like the same process running multiple times but really isn't.

Likewise, rundll32.exe is simply running some dll to allow a program to function. Problem is, I don't know of any way to tell what program is associated with a particular instance of rundll32.exe. If you see one of them chewing up all or most of your CPU for an extended period, there is a problem with whatever the other program might happen to be. And chances are you can't even kill the process if it is busy. But seeing more than one isn't unusual at all.

Seeing Dennis would only be unusual if your name were shirley. :)

Thanks Newt. I was assuming (hoping) that they were normal occuring processes. Thought I would ask to make sure.
