Re-installing XP Disk Defragmenter

Does anyone know how to re-install the Disk Defragmenter in XP Pro? When I installed Diskeeper Lite and than uninstall it the XP Disk Defragmenter did not re-install.
I have XP SP1.
Thanks..

If you have the SP1 slipstreamed CD, then Run: sfc /scannow
(You could use the same procedure as below for the non-slipstreamed CD, but I suggest this just to be sure any supporting files, like Help, are also replaced.)

If you don't have that CD, but have the original XP one, then try extracting the defrag program from the original CD.

If "X" is your hard drive letter, and "Y" is your CD drive letter, and "Windows" is your installation directory (substitute "Winnt" if you upgraded and that is your directory), then Run:

expand Y\i386\defrag.ex_ X\Windows\System32\defrag.exe

The normal XP defragmenter is a version of Diskeeper, so installing Diskeeper replaces the original defrag program.

Re-installing XP Disk Defragmenter

Thanks for the reply. My problem is that the snapin is failing. After I un-installed diskeeper lite the snapin fails with "snapin creation failed". The defrag.exe is in the system32 folder, I did copy a new copy from another system. I don't see any way to fix this, there is no option to re-install defrag snapin. Is fun that the system didn't repair its self. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

There seems to have been some problems with the uninstall program removing some core OS files and replacing with older versions, at least in older versions of the uninstaller.

You didn't say whether you installed DK before you installed SP1.

I'd try a repair installation.

If you have a CD with SP1 slipstreamed into the original installation, then boot from CD, proceed as if you were reinstalling. When you get to the screen following the license agreement (after you press F8 to accept it), setup will show you your present installation(s). Select and press R to repair it. You don't lose anything off your disk.

If you don't have SP1 integrated into your installation CD, you will have to reinstall SP1 after doing the repair installation as above.

If you would like to make a slipstreamed CD:

Manny,
If Abraxas suggestions don't help, or as an alternative, I would suggest reinstalling the latest version of Diskeeper Lite as it is a better version than the (even lighter) version licenced to Microsoft and incorporated in XP. Apart from the annoying upgrade splash screen everytime you run it, this "lite" version doesn't expire and is the same as the retail version of Diskeeper 7.x except for the "Set And Forget and Bootime defragmentation" features that are not supplied, and anyway aren't supplied in the version licenced to Microsoft.

Re-installing XP Disk Defragmenter

Abrasas & Paul thanks for your help, but I downloaded the O & O Defrag 2000 Freeware. It appears to work better than DK. I gave up on XP defrag its not worth the effect, so I will stick with O&O.
Thanks again for your help.

O&O is very good. I finally bought the XP version.

You picked the easiest route.
