I'm in the process of migrating my "stuff" from my 11-year-old XP desktop to my Win 8.1 laptop. The desktop is till plugged in to my home network as an ethernet device.

I've left it plugged into mains power and ethernet as I gradually remove data from the box. Over the last few days, I've been surprised to see it powered up when I stopped by the den.

When I tried to shut it down through Windows this morning, it ignored the command. When using the front-panel button it took three or four attempts and it restarted later without any input. For the moment I have it unplugged from mains power.

I'm considering disconnecting its ethernet connection so there's no risk of it being hacked. It doesn't have a wireless hook-up and I don't need one to transfer data to my new laptop..

Can anyone suggest a reason why it would fire up and connect to the internet without any keyboard input?

    Any recommendations, guys?

Are you sure it's not infected? Neil.

It could be, Neil. I've also disconnected it from the router so it can't screw up my new lap-top or DW's iPad.

Hi Frank. Did you make any recent changes to the system before this issue occurred?

You will need to check in the BIOS to see what events the PC is set to wake up on, such as wake on LAN, wake on key press etc. Each BIOS uses slightly different terminology. To get into the BIOS you normally press F1, Delete or some other function key when the computer is booting. You may well find that you want to turn most of these events off so look for settings related to those functions.

No recent changes, Evan. - maybe 2 years ago? It's for the boneyard shortly, so I'm just going to start it off line, copy what I still need for my lap top, then clean everything back to just the XP OS. I might check whether our local computer fix-it store can use any of it.

I'll have s-i-l check out to see if anything needs to be saved for future projects.

    Frank
