Windows XP "search"

Whenever I try to use the "Search" button on the start menu
Windows pet dog performs its party tricks, produces a list of result
and my PC freezes leaving me with no option other than to turn off the main power and go back to a re-start of the PC.

My conclusion is thet either I am doing something wrongly or that dog needs the attention of some sort of cyber veterinary surgeon !

Can anyone help ?

Got a Fix

It was corruption. This is how I fixed it.

Went to services.msc, found Indexing Service and set it to Stop. Status hung at stopping, and it never truly stopped. So, I changed boot up settings to Disabled, rather than automatic.

Rebooted.

Now, with Indexing disabled, I went into Computer Management > Services & Applications > Indexing Service and could view my current catalog without it locking up.

Listed was "System" indexing C:\ .. I right clicked on the entry, and deleted it.

Upon this deletion, I was able to create a new catalog. Named it System, and linked it up with C:\.

Went back into services.msc, started up Indexing Service, and set it to Automatic for startup.

Search is working fine now across all methods. It was obviously corruption.

And, now that I've fixed it... I'm turning it off. I just had to figure out how to fix it first.
