When one backs up the c: partition, does this also include the so called "boot sector" or is the boot sector something different?

Hi sdculp. If you just backup your files on the C drive then no it wouldn't include the boot sector but if you create a system image then that includes all the data on the drive in the partitions that you choose to backup.

Thanks for the reply. I've always wondered about that. Is the boot sector something that is visible in Explorer?

Is there a good reason for backing up the boot sector?

The MBR is located on the very first sector of the first physical Hard Disk so it wouldn't be visible in Windows Explorer.

You wouldn't be able to manually backup the boot sector since its tied to your Windows installation. You can either backup certain files that you want or you can make a complete system image which includes the MBR.

I guess the process of cloning or imaging copies the boot sector? I've noticed that some backup software gives you the option.
