The simplest fix would be to try and use Windows System Restore to roll back Windows to a point in time when your computer was functioning correctly. It allows you to undo system changes without affecting your personal files, such as e-mail, documents, or photos.

Hi Bimmer Guy. Are you talking about the programs in the All Programs menu in the Start Menu or the items that you pin to the frequently used area on the Start Menu?

If its just the items that somehow became unpinned, couldn't you just re-pin those items to the Start Menu again?

Evan, I click on say, ccleaner, word, excel, malwarebytes. None show up in the start menu. I am running malwarebytes and have run adwcleaner. How do you know how far back in restore to go? I went back a few months and it could not restore.

Take a look at this link, Customize Start menu in Windows XP.

Look in the section titled Customizing Start menu Privacy options - program and documents tracking. In the customize Start Menu window on the General tab make sure the number of programs on the Start Menu isn't set to zero.

Hi guys, thank you for the excellent and timely responses. I will try and go back as far as need be in system restore. Appreciate those links you found! The one by Fred Langa looks promising. If all else fails I can leave that area blank or drag some items in there. Again, the help is so appreciated. Oh yes, how do I mark this resolved?
