I have a scratch install that is now booting a problem drive which has been under discussion here.

After the install, HD Audio Deck shows in the tray. I've avoided this prog for years but initially had it as part of an MSI board build. If it is possible that is 'left over' from a previous install I have no idea.

But unlike my usual installs, now I have no sound. I've checked all players including volume in XP Accessories and cannot find anything that is muted to prevent programs such as WinAmp or Goldwave from functioning. I'm just stumped. The only thing different is this HD Audio Deck in the tray.

There is an uninstall for HDADeck which I will try to get going.

Any other tips on restoring sound that is "turned off "

My playback device is a Yamaha RPU 100 USB receiver which I use daily. I redid the driver for that unit but it did not help.

An easy one for a change.

Went into msconfig (Start > Run > msconfig > Startup tab)

And there was HD audio Deck. I unchecked the box and played an mp3. To my renewed delight I heard the voice of Rachel Price.

HD Audio Deck was the problem. I still want to run a cleaner to make sure it is gone.
