I have the situation where XP wants to start, passes the first logo, goes black with the cursor highlight, and returns with a welcome screen and stays there hung up.

I attempted to fixboot and fixmbr in a prescribed manner from the XP disc Repair option but the operation failed to correct.

This other blue screen problem followed a snafu loading a cd drive with the Ghost clone program. I didn't get the Ghost routine to stop in time (cd drawer opeing and closing) and apparently it effected the target and source disk both.

There is no error message on this 'welcome screen' problem. Does it come from one specific source?

If you made an error with Ghost it could mean that system files got overwritten/deleted.

Best thing is to do a Windows XP Repair install, hopefully you have your XP installation disk.

Boot from the WinXP CD (you may have to change a setting in your BIOS that allows you to boot from the CD). Do not choose the option to repair an XP installation using Recovery Console when prompted, choose the option to To set up Windows XP now press ENTER.

After more files have been copied, you'll get another selection screen where you should select the current XP installation, & the option To Repair the selected Windows XP installation, press R.

You'll need an XP CD with the same SP level as currently installed.

Such a CD can be created using a retail installation CD to slipstream Service Packs to create an installation CD at the same Service Pack level as the installed OS .....

Slipstreaming Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Create Bootable CD

Slipstreaming Windows XP Service Pack 3 and Create Bootable CD

but note that you cannot use an OEM CD to create a slipstreamed SP2 or SP3 CD.

    Arie,

There is some duplication on this topic in a more specific question I put in on the startup file called giveio.sys.

That contains all the observations I had when running the repair install which repeatedly fails.

The repair install makes some headway but tries to reboot, goes to the safe mode option screen. Then running Safe Mode stops at the line with giveio.sys which (from reading) is a third party file used by Speed fan. There is a lot of different information on what this odd giveio.sys file does or is for. SATA drivers or even audio install.

To be complete, I had updated the BIOS on this Biostar MCP6PB M2 motherboard which may also be in play.

The details of what Setup does during install is here:

    http://www.windowsbbs.com/windows-xp/107925-what-giveio-sys-how-get-rid-problems.html#post627488

And I see that some other responder is giving some detail on it just now.
