I made a search here at Windowsbbs and out on google for solutions to the RPC (Remote Procedure Call) server unavailable error given at system level when requesting System File Checker /scannow command.

This is in a Windows XP install from scratch. The issue seems to be one of dependencies (which I normally associate with Linux) and network connections that the RPC cannot find.

The closest best answer I found was to go to

"Control Panel .> Administrative Tools -> Services. Right clicking on a service will give some more options "

"Properties" was suggested as the trouble spot.

I have not used administrative tools barely at all except to reformat a second HD on system. I don't know what Properties to look for.

The goal is simply to get SFC to go and examine the setup disk in the usual manner in the event of an HD failure.

SFC did not run at the RUN box. It ran up until the error with the request

Start > Run > cmd > and then putting the sfc /scannow command in the DOS box.

Forgot to add the error description:

Windows File Protection Windows could not initiate a scan of protected system files. The the specific error code is: 0x000006ba [The RPC Server is unavailable]

Somewhere in services and properties RPC has to be turned on.

Why? In the event of HD failure SFC will be of no use. And if a new install then there is no need to run SFC, all the files are fresh off the cd. And SFC does not scan the setup disk, it scans the C drive.

I have marked this resolved. The link provided suggests things that I am not able to do such as registry edits.

Thanks for your help and understanding. It was an experiment. My original unmodified installation runs SFC in the usual manner.
