A friend asked me to remove XP from his laptop. It is a dual boot with Windows 7.

I am presently moving his pictures and music to an external drive before removing XP.

Can I just remove the partition that XP is on and then re-allocate that space to 7? XP is on the "C:" partition, 7 is on "e: ", and he has a Data "F: "

Never had to deal with a Dual Boot system before and don't want to mess it up.

Like you, I know next to nothing about dual boot but my computer dual boots Win XP and Win 7. I installed Win XP first and created all partitions from within Win XP. C: for Win XP, D: for Win 7 and E: for data. When I installed Win 7 on D:, the installer asked if I wished to dual boot and it then used C: as the boot partition. (There was no free space for that small 200 MB boot partition which I didn't want.) I can not remove Win XP without messing up Win 7. I'm sure it can be done but I think that I would opt for a reinstallation.

So, how was the dual boot created?

Is D: that small boot partition?

I'll have to look, I am not sure of the partition sizes. I did see that When XP is booted it is on the C Drive and when 7 is booted it is on the C drive.

He bought it that way on Ebay.

As I understand it, the BIOS boots a partition by a number but the partition from which the OS is running always gets the label C: and the others in sequence.

After you remove XP you will likely have to boot from a Win7 repair cd or the install dvd and access a command prompt to run:

    Bootrec.exe /FixMbr
    then
    Bootrec.exe /FixBoot
    then possibly
    Bootrec.exe /RebuildBcd

    see this:
Use Bootrec.exe in the Windows RE to troubleshoot startup issues

If Windows 7 has placed any boot files on the XP partition (it likely did) then you probably will not be able to delete the partition while logged in to Win7. You may have to remove that partition from the command prompt (repair cd).
