I'm helping a friend with a very slow computer - Dell Dimension 2350, XP SP3. I took care of most of the slowness by increasing the memory from 512MB to 1GB. Still a bit sluggish but much better now. Early on in the process I tried to boot into Safe mode and got the blue screen with this message:
I Googled this message and most of what I found indicated a problem installing XP or a possible hard drive problem.

I have run these scans - Norton Internet Security, Malwarebytes, and ESET OnLine - all found 0 problems. So right now I am not suspecting malware. The friend does have several TuneUp/SpeedUp programs - CleanMem, Glary Utilities, Tune Up Utilities 2007, TuneXP 1.5, which I Googled and none seem to be considered too objectionable. I also downloaded and ran HiJack this - created a log file which I could attach if necessary. Didn't remove any of the found items.

Any suggestions on either the blue screen or the sluggishness?

Have you carried out a Diagnosis scan on the Hard Drive?
It would pay to uninstall all those unnecessary "cleanup tools ", Defrag the drive and see if there is an improvement. Neil.

Hi Robert. First run this fix and see if you can now boot the computer into Safe Mode successfully.

Does that blue screen only happen when you attempt to boot the computer into Safe Mode or does it occur in Normal Mode as well?

Since you ran HijackThis please post the log in your next reply.

I ran ChkDsk and the log found 0 bad sectors. I couldn't copy it or I would paste it here. I will get rid of the "cleanup tools" and run Defrag next.

    Evan

I ran your tool and was able to boot into Safe Mode OK. Many thanks. I was getting the blue screen only when I tried to boot in Safe Mode. Normal bootup was OK. Here is the HiJack This log:

In HijackThis select the following checkboxes:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RealTray] C:\Program Files\Real\RealPlayer\RealPlay.exe SYSTEMBOOTHIDEPLAYER
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Picasa Media Detector] C:\Program Files\Picasa2\PicasaMediaDetector.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MoneyStartUp10.0] "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Money\System\Activation.exe "
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MMTray] C:\Program Files\MUSICMATCH\MUSICMATCH Jukebox\mm_tray.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mmtask] C:\Program Files\MUSICMATCH\MUSICMATCH Jukebox\mmtask.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DVDSentry] C:\WINDOWS\System32\DSentry.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MoneyAgent] "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Money\System\Money Express.exe "
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [DellSupport] "C:\Program Files\DellSupport\DSAgnt.exe" /startup

Then click on the Fixed Checked button to remove those items from the machine.

Once that is done follow these steps:

    1. Please download AdwCleaner and save it to your desktop. Run the program by double clicking on it.

    2. When the program opens click on the Scan button.

    3. Then when the program has finished scanning, click on the Clean button. The program will reboot the computer. Post the AdwCleaner log in your next reply.

    4. Next, download the Junkware Removal Tool and save it to your desktop. Run the program and post the JRT log in your next reply.

Things seem to be moving along pretty well. The computer appears to be pretty responsive for a 6 year old that is a bit underpowered. My friend is very pleased - so thanks to all.

Sounds good Robert. There were some potentially unwanted programs on that system so if you feel that you want to get a more thorough cleaning of the machine then broni can help you with that.
