Have you checked that the sound is not muted?

Have you checked out Device Manager - any exclamation marks against any of the items listed under Sound?

It's diagnostics, it has nothing to do with updates.

Try booting in safe mode.... you get sound there?

If not: Create a new (Windows) User account, and see if you get sound.

Then it's most likely hardware related.

Go to Device Manager and uninstall the Sigmatel, then reboot. Windows New Hardware wizard will run after booting. If Windows does not detect the sound device then you have a hardware problem and will have to get an external usb sound card if want sound again.
