I downloaded the latest security updates for Windows XP (that popped up and said they were ready to be downloaded).

Security Update for .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 and 3.5 SP1 on Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x86 (KB2518864)
Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 on Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x86 (KB2572073)
Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 on Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x86 (KB2633880)

But when I attempt to install them, something weird happens. It goes through the usual motions of installing, but when it's all through, instead of the usual window that opens up at the end stating that "You Will Now Have To Restart Your Computer For Updates To Take Effect," I just get a window that says "Finished Installing Updates" and after I click "Close," the little yellow shield reappears in my taskbar a couple of minutes later and announces once again that "Updates Are Ready To Install." The very same updates! In other words, they won't stay installed. I've already tried installing them directly from Windows Update Website, and then once again with my Avast security disabled, but just get the same result. That little yellow update shield is still in my taskbar as I am typing this.

I've checked for viruses with both Avast and Malwarebytes, and everything comes up clean. I have also gone through the whole "Temporary File Cleaner" bit, and when the computer turns back on, the little yellow update shield is still in the taskbar. Note that other than this, my computer seems to be running fine (if a bit slow, due to it's age).

Any help in this matter would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance.

    Does rebooting make any difference?

What happens if you click on the yellow shield and and install from there?

    These are all old updates:

KB2518864 was published in June 2011 and installed on my system.

KB2572073 was published in October 2011 and installed on my system.

KB2633880 was published in February 2012 and installed on my system. This update has been replaced by KB2604092 which was published in May 2012 and installed on my system.

With no new information from Microsoft, only old Security Bulletins and the files being the same, I'm reluctant to install them again. I'm always suspicious of "out of schedule updates" and will wait for a few days, at least, but probably until the next scheduled monthly update!

    From my previous post:

To clarify, I'm reluctant when updates are reissued without an explanation. If my scrutiny reveals a unique KB-number with a fresh KB-article or even a fresh Security Bulletin, then I will probably go ahead and install the update.

Yes, there is a problem with these updates being (re) offered over & over again. The people in charge have been notified, so they'll get the message when they get to their desk in the morning (in Seattle). Hopefully it'll be fixed soon.

Thank you all for responding. My only concern at this point is that there is absolutely no way of removing that yellow shield from my taskbar, and I just want to make sure that it isn't doing anything harmful until the next update (and if what Christer said is accurate, apparently the "next" update already happened and is a little slow in getting to me). As I mentioned in my initial post, I have already rebooted the computer via the TFC device, and yes it's still there even after doing that.

I never said anything like that.

My second post was to avoid people misunderstanding my first post as I never install "out of schedule updates ". I do install most of them but not those that are suspicious, like having been installed before.

Arie on the other hand indicated that they are "false positives" and the error will be removed shortly and the yellow shield will vanish, even for those that, like me, sat on their hands and did nothing.

The issue appears to have been fixed.

MS12-035 /.net 2 supersedes the three patches named above. When MS12-035 was taken off the server (for an update to the patch), the AU detection made the XP and server 2003's pull down these older .nets again. And again. And again.

As of 10 a.m pacific it was fixed (confirmed here personally).

A manual session at Windows Update reveals "no high priority updates available" or whatever it says but the yellow shield still lingers. Maybe it takes a reboot for it to go away? I'll know tomorrow morning.

Few years ago - I was up late working on a few computers... An update for a drive controller came down for three computers... I installed it on one and crashed it big time... I got on the phone and called anyone at MS that would listen... They took it down within an hour.

The other way to 'do' it is to visit Windows Update, run a custom scan. It'll say that 'no critical updates are available' and the yellow shield should disappear.

I did that but the yellow shield did not disappear.

This morning, when starting the computer, it was gone (not the computer ... ... the yellow shield) and did not come back with the "automatic live update" session.

I just clicked the shield, selected the Custom button, unchecked those updates that were offered for download, then clicked on the Close button. I was offered the option to hide those updates. When done the shield disappeared.

Scroll half way down the User Guide for instructions.
