I have been given an Acer ASpire One netbook to look at that won't boot up. It open up on the page that tells you there was a problem and offers you the Start Normally or safe mode options both of which I have tried. I have also tried the last good configuration and nothing happens. The netbook goes into the Windows XP logo screen and then returns to the Safe mode screen. I don't have a recovery disc as it is a net book and a friend suggested a recovery USB but I don't know how to do that. Can anyone help me.
    Operating system Windows XP

Hi , if supported you may be able to recover Windows to factory spec via a hidden recovery partition accessed via clicking on ALT + F10 keys during initial power on (start of BIOS post before Windows starts) and following the prompts

    Thanks Tigerbright,
I tried that but it still keeps going back to the safe maode screen and I don't think that there is a recovery partitiion on this netbook. Thank you again

Hi - i do not know your netbook model, but the Aspire One family seems to natively support onboard recovery
but first you must enable recovery within BIOS setup , F2 to enter during Acer image at Bios post splash screen at power up
    enable : acer disk-to-disk recovery
enable : D2D recovery in Main
    save and exit
then click ALT + F10 ( + means at same time) during Acer image at BIOS post splash screen at power up
    to initiate recovery process

Thanks again Tigerbright. When I go into the BIOS the D2D recovery is enabled already tbut there is no acer disk to disk recovery. The F12 boot menu is disabled and whn I try the Alt + F10 it just take me to the safe mode screen. Oh and it keeps bleeping at me

Hi Speedytwitch, BIOS post beeps ? what sequence ? That does mean something
BIOS runs about 80 tests of the computer prior to booting - if there is a fault it beeps a certain code which translates into the problem device
    More reading here:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power-on_self-test
Usually a combination of short and long . however if unrelenting short beeps could be a faulty keyboard, a stuck key - try an external keyboard to isolate this error
You might need to note the BIOS manufacturer as I can not find reference in the manual I am consulting - the manufacturer and bios version should be displayed in BIOS setup via F2
also the exact computer model will be helpful (usually on the underside of a netbook or BIOS setup)

not to press the point , but the acer prescribed method of accessing the onboard restore applet is to hold down the ALT key while clicking repeatedly the F10 key , as the system is powered up

Also considering the age of your netbook , a BIOS upgrade might be worth investigating - some of the early models have over 10 upgrade versions

Hello Tigerbright, Thanks for your help so far it is very much appreciated. I turned the offending netbook on this morning and it is now silent no bleeps no sound at all. I have treid the Alt + F10 repeatedly but not change. I have got into the BIOS settingsand have got the BIOS version V1.25 The model is a KAV60. I hope this helps you. If i try to start it normally then the windows XP logo screen apprears and the moving three blocks goes through two full runs and then on the third run it stops and back to the safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command prompt, last known good configuration and start normally screen opens and I'm stuck again.
Thank you again for your help.
